As my birthday fell during the week and I had to go to work, how rude, my birthday treat was saved for today.

We headed off to the beautiful and very old village of Avebury which is unique in that it sits in the middle of a prehistoric stone circle.  It's one of my favourite places in the world; it's steeped in mystery and even better, it has the most gorgeous pub that serves food to die for!

So after a very delicious lunch, we spent a nice afternoon peacefully wandering around the circle and soaking up a little of the atmosphere.

Here's an ancient old relic.  Oh, and a stone too.

I loved Avebury when I went there many moons ago. One day we'll have to go back to that part of the country and have another look around. Silbury Hill is pretty awesome too.

It's an amazing place, I'm totally fascinated by our prehistory, we have such a wealth of riches!

Looks like you had fun, I love Avebury & it's so great that you can walk right up to the stones. Gives a proper perspective of their size. I love the new agey shop there too! Beautiful place thanks for sharing.

That's what I love about Avebury, makes it a much more intense experience than Stonehenge which has sadly been commercialised to death!

I visited Avebury in 1989 and it was a huge highlight for me. I am planning to visit again this summer when we bring our son to England for the first time.

Hint: am looking for couchsurfing opportunities for my family of three! :)

PS and I hope you had a fantastic birthday!! :D

Woohoo, how exciting - when in summer where you planning to come over? Depending on when it is, I may be able to offer a bed - or at least meet up!

And thanks for the birthday wishes, I had a lovely day :)

We will be in England from Monday June 16 to Friday July 4. :)

One plan is to visit Stonehenge on Solstice morning, which I think will be lively with Druids and hippies. I think on Solstice Day you can approach the stones, unlike on other days, and also admission is free. So we'll probably be to Avebury around that time as well.

There are so many great places we want to visit and revisit, and never enough time for everything!

What a lovely place. That is one of the marvels about Europe, all the centuries old historical places. Who would have thought that a bunch of stones could be so peaceful.

Oh, I wish you could visit Avebury - there is something magical, almost spiritual about Avebury. It's an amazing place - I think it brings out my 'inner pagan' :)

What a lovely place, it's somewhere I'd like to visit. That and Glastonbury for the Tor, and the whole site of Avalon theory. It looks absolutely stunning there.

Wow, what a beautiful place, I can feel the good energy coming off my screen :D Love places like this, as I'm a pagan they hold a certain pull for me :)

Cool!

I adore these sorts of places. If I was going to categorise myself, I would call myself a humanist, but I have a lot of empathy for pagan beliefs, that's why I think these places have such a hold on me too.
That also comes across in my pictures - a lot of them have a vaguely pagan influence with subjects such as moongazing hares, white stags, wolves, and unicorns.

And *waves back* thank you :)

I've been a practicing pagan for years now and I love my way of life, gives me such a sense of freedom, and I love hearing about other people's ideas and beliefs too, because that's what makes the world go round.

I may have to visit there ya know, does look beautiful :)
