Hi, for anyone who is not aware, it appears that [personal profile] spikedluv passed away unexpectedly near the beginning of the month. The information is shared here on a comment on her last post, https://spikedluv.dreamwidth.org/2143159.html#comments, and has a link to her obituary.

spikedluv and I would often comment on each other's posts. I also had the honour of making art for multiple of her fics. She often bid on my offers for Fandom Trumps Hate and other fandom auctions. She was always such a pleasure to work with, and was always delighted by the graphics I created for her.

She loved Hudson & Rex and Murder She Wrote, among many other fandoms.

She will be missed.

tsuki_no_bara: two curling stones on the ice (curling)
[personal profile] tsuki_no_bara
first important thing: the us mixed doubles won silver against sweden, which isn't as good as a gold but is the first us medal in that branch of curling so i'm not complaining too much. it was a good game too, very tense. (i may or may not have missed an admim meeting because i was watching it online at work. ahem.) and my curling club got a shoutout. :D

2 fast 2 curlious. hee.

(last night i watched some of the women us vs sweden and cory thiesse who was on the mixed doubles team is on the women's team and she must be so tired.)

second important thing: i got snowed on tuesday on the way home. :DDD it was very exciting.

other sports i've seen include some ski jump (looks both fun and absolutely terrifying), some speed skating (holy shit thighs), and some ice dancing (my favorite was the spanish couple who skated to the music from dune). i was briefly distracted by more norwegian drama, namely the biathlete who used his bronze-medal interview to admit he cheated on his girlfriend (she broke up with him) and then also admitted he hoped his public declaration of love would win her back. it did not. there's also drama in the figure skating but it sounds less like "guy did a stupid thing" drama and more like "everyone's covering for the rapist" drama and that is just way more serious.

i also randomly caught the gold medal run for women's snowboard cross which was won by an australian with a huge cheering section all wearing pink hats. so cute. the snowboarders all hugged each other after the run and that was also extremely adorable. now i'm watching the men's halfpipe and one of the japanese snowboarders is wearing pearly nail polish and how can you not love that? shaun white is there and his reactions to the tricks and the falls are fantastic.

now you're gonna get curling links because it's me and i only get to do this once every four years.

snoop dogg hangs with the curlers. korey dropkin's mom taught him about curling. (mom's name is shelly and while i don't know her i think she was president of the club at one point and was basically kind of a big deal. everything i've ever heard about her is positive.)

the oldest athlete at the games is a fifty-four-year-old lawyer on the us men's curling team. :D one of the other guys on the team, this lawyer curled with his dad. it's gotta be weird to be old enough to have fathered the other folks on your team but it sounds like they're all very cool about it.

i don't know what to call this. there are wrestlers. it's weird. also cute.

how about a curling stone cake?

and finally an article about my club, because god knows i've mentioned it enough. (that should be a non-paywalled link.)

couple more general olympics links:

meet one of only two greenlanders at the olympics. she's a biathlete there with her brother (also a biathlete) and if you saw people waving the greenlandic flag along the course? danish fans showing their support.

the olympic village ran out of condoms in THREE DAYS. someone seriously underestimated the amount of sex these attractive, athletic folks were going to be having.

speaking of curling i was way off my game on sunday altho the ice was quite weird but we had to call the game when someone on the other team slipped, fell, landed on her wrist, and had to get off the ice. her hubs took her to the er. they were ahead so we just gave them the win and ended it. i'm sure she's out for the rest of the season but i hope she's ok. i consequently did not see any of the super bowl or the halftime show which was kind of a bummer because i wanted to watch that.

and saturday for dinner i was really feeling it for hawaiian food and fortunately! there's a place not super far from me that can provide. i get there and the guy behind the counter asked me "you want some free food?" and i went "uh..." because on the one hand yes, who's going to turn down free dinner? but on the other, why were they giving it away?? because they were about to close. so i went home with my spam musubi and my mix plate and a random container of poke (yum), a random container of mac salad (yum), and a random container of pickled cucumbers (yum). a++, will order late from them again.

wednesday was the anniversary of the day the good voters of nevada passed a constitutional amendment prohibiting people who'd participated in a duel from voting or holding office. they voted on this in 1889. it may or may not still be on the books.

Back in August of 2025, we announced a temporary block on account creation for users under the age of 18 from the state of Tennessee, due to the court in Netchoice's challenge to the law (which we're a part of!) refusing to prevent the law from being enforced while the lawsuit plays out. Today, I am sad to announce that we've had to add South Carolina to that list. When creating an account, you will now be asked if you're a resident of Tennessee or South Carolina. If you are, and your birthdate shows you're under 18, you won't be able to create an account.

We're very sorry to have to do this, and especially on such short notice. The reason for it: on Friday, South Carolina governor Henry McMaster signed the South Carolina Age-Appropriate Design Code Act into law, with an effective date of immediately. The law is so incredibly poorly written it took us several days to even figure out what the hell South Carolina wants us to do and whether or not we're covered by it. We're still not entirely 100% sure about the former, but in regards to the latter, we're pretty sure the fact we use Google Analytics on some site pages (for OS/platform/browser capability analysis) means we will be covered by the law. Thankfully, the law does not mandate a specific form of age verification, unlike many of the other state laws we're fighting, so we're likewise pretty sure that just stopping people under 18 from creating an account will be enough to comply without performing intrusive and privacy-invasive third-party age verification. We think. Maybe. (It's a really, really badly written law. I don't know whether they intended to write it in a way that means officers of the company can potentially be sentenced to jail time for violating it, but that's certainly one possible way to read it.)

Netchoice filed their lawsuit against SC over the law as I was working on making this change and writing this news post -- so recently it's not even showing up in RECAP yet for me to link y'all to! -- but here's the complaint as filed in the lawsuit, Netchoice v Wilson. Please note that I didn't even have to write the declaration yet (although I will be): we are cited in the complaint itself with a link to our August news post as evidence of why these laws burden small websites and create legal uncertainty that causes a chilling effect on speech. \o/

In fact, that's the victory: in December, the judge ruled in favor of Netchoice in Netchoice v Murrill, the lawsuit over Louisiana's age-verification law Act 456, finding (once again) that requiring age verification to access social media is unconstitutional. Judge deGravelles' ruling was not simply a preliminary injunction: this was a final, dispositive ruling stating clearly and unambiguously "Louisiana Revised Statutes §§51:1751–1754 violate the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, as incorporated by the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution", as well as awarding Netchoice their costs and attorney's fees for bringing the lawsuit. We didn't provide a declaration in that one, because Act 456, may it rot in hell, had a total registered user threshold we don't meet. That didn't stop Netchoice's lawyers from pointing out that we were forced to block service to Mississippi and restrict registration in Tennessee (pointing, again, to that news post), and Judge deGravelles found our example so compelling that we are cited twice in his ruling, thus marking the first time we've helped to get one of these laws enjoined or overturned just by existing. I think that's a new career high point for me.

I need to find an afternoon to sit down and write an update for [site community profile] dw_advocacy highlighting everything that's going on (and what stage the lawsuits are in), because folks who know there's Some Shenanigans afoot in their state keep asking us whether we're going to have to put any restrictions on their states. I'll repeat my promise to you all: we will fight every state attempt to impose mandatory age verification and deanonymization on our users as hard as we possibly can, and we will keep actions like this to the clear cases where there's no doubt that we have to take action in order to prevent liability.

In cases like SC, where the law takes immediate effect, or like TN and MS, where the district court declines to issue a temporary injunction or the district court issues a temporary injunction and the appellate court overturns it, we may need to take some steps to limit our potential liability: when that happens, we'll tell you what we're doing as fast as we possibly can. (Sometimes it takes a little while for us to figure out the exact implications of a newly passed law or run the risk assessment on a law that the courts declined to enjoin. Netchoice's lawyers are excellent, but they're Netchoice's lawyers, not ours: we have to figure out our obligations ourselves. I am so very thankful that even though we are poor in money, we are very rich in friends, and we have a wide range of people we can go to for help.)

In cases where Netchoice filed the lawsuit before the law's effective date, there's a pending motion for a preliminary injunction, the court hasn't ruled on the motion yet, and we're specifically named in the motion for preliminary injunction as a Netchoice member the law would apply to, we generally evaluate that the risk is low enough we can wait and see what the judge decides. (Right now, for instance, that's Netchoice v Jones, formerly Netchoice v Miyares, mentioned in our December news post: the judge has not yet ruled on the motion for preliminary injunction.) If the judge grants the injunction, we won't need to do anything, because the state will be prevented from enforcing the law. If the judge doesn't grant the injunction, we'll figure out what we need to do then, and we'll let you know as soon as we know.

I know it's frustrating for people to not know what's going to happen! Believe me, it's just as frustrating for us: you would not believe how much of my time is taken up by tracking all of this. I keep trying to find time to update [site community profile] dw_advocacy so people know the status of all the various lawsuits (and what actions we've taken in response), but every time I think I might have a second, something else happens like this SC law and I have to scramble to figure out what we need to do. We will continue to update [site community profile] dw_news whenever we do have to take an action that restricts any of our users, though, as soon as something happens that may make us have to take an action, and we will give you as much warning as we possibly can. It is absolutely ridiculous that we still have to have this fight, but we're going to keep fighting it for as long as we have to and as hard as we need to.

I look forward to the day we can lift the restrictions on Mississippi, Tennessee, and now South Carolina, and I apologize again to our users (and to the people who temporarily aren't able to become our users) from those states.

On Saturday, Mr D and I headed up to London for my (very) early birthday treat.  The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy immersive stage show.

For those of you who know my birthday is in April, the reason this was so early was because the show's run ends on the 15th February.

I love the HHGTTG.  I first read the book when I was about 14, and then all the subsequent sequels, and have always counted it as one of my favourite stories.

The show was a musical reinterpretation of the story and it did a great job (I mean, it did have to fit five books into 90 minutes).  It brought in Arthur Dent's love interest, Fenchurch, from book 4.  The show was energetic and fun, and very respectful of the HHG universe.  I had a fab time, I think I got more out of it than Mr D because I'm so much more familiar with the story.  Mr D had never read past book 2, so had no idea who Fenchurch was.  But he said, once he wrapped his head around the story, he really got into it, and wished he could see it again because he'd enjoy it so much more.  Sadly it comes off soon, so unless it's resurrected somewhere else, that's unlikely!

Highlights of a great show was us drinking our Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters (I wouldn't say it felt like having our brains smashed out by a slice of lemon wrapped around a large gold brick, but it was yummy all the same) and me having a conversation with Marvin the Paranoid Android that went thus:

Marvin: what is your name?
Me: I'm Jane
Marvin: I don't care.  Jane, I've been practicing giving people compliments.  May I give you a compliment?
Me: of course!
Marvin: You are wearing shoes.  That's very sensible.
Me: Thank you.  I've had worse compliments than that!
Marvin: I don't care

Of course, anyone who's familiar with the HHG universe knows that any self-respecting hitch hiker never forgets their towel, so of course, I had to treat myself to one!

WhatsApp Image 2026-02-08 at 15.45.25

I did have a few tears when there was a tribute to Douglas Adams at the end of the show. So much love and respect for that man and his exceptional mind.

Altogether a fabulous day!  Here are a few more pics - official ones because photography wasn't allowed!

mother nature clearly felt bad that i missed two snowstorms while i was in florida because we got snow today. :D it wasn't particularly heavy but it came down all morning and into the afternoon and blew around a lot. i went into harvard square to get my comics only to discover a sign on the door that said "opening late due to car trouble" so i got back on the bus and came home and sat on my ass and watched olympics. i saw the end of the 3000m women's speedskating which italy won, making it the first speedskating gold for an italian woman. her extremely cute two year old son was of course in the arena. she was also extremely cute bouncing around the floor wearing the italian flag after her win. i also caught some of the us-finland women's qualifying hockey, the end of the men's big air snowboarding (japan won gold and silver), and of course two games of mixed doubles curling. (we beat chechia and lost to great britain. but after that loss we were still 4-1, so.) i may or may not have watched us-chechia at work yesterday morning. ahem. look, it was friday, it was slow, the game started at 8:35a, i had some time.  also one of the curlers used to play at my curling club altho now he trains in minnesota.  we're very proud.

i get a digital subscription to the new york times through work, so i get nyt email newsletters, and the one on monday had some words about the olympics, a lot of them about curling. the writer says the winter games are "more about artistry. They have athletes clad in spandex sliding down ice tubes. They have curling."  he mentions that there's curling on wednesday and snowboarding on thursday before the opening ceremonies.  and then this:

And it will be home to some of the most exciting events of the Games. It has the Sliding Center, which hosts bobsled, luge and skeleton. And it has the Curling Stadium, where, naturally, curling happens.

Why do you keep bringing up curling?
It’s just the best. There is no sport that more quickly converts a person from “this looks silly” to “I am extremely invested.” It helps that the competitors are entirely ordinary-looking — that could be you or me out there, if only we had been better at sweeping in our youth — and that the rules are easy to understand.

It’s like a game you might play on a lawn or in a pub. Competitors try to slide heavy stones (they call them rocks, and they weigh around 40 pounds) closer to the target than the other team’s. There’s shouting and bumping and, of course, the aforementioned sweeping. Here’s a guide.

it's true that curlers look like regular people more than do most olympians.  the us men who won gold in 2018 (and wasn't that a surprise) looked like a bunch of suburban dads who ambled down to their local club to throw rocks on weekends.  i'm a little surprised the nyt writer didn't mention team norway's funkypants but maybe it's because the news about norway was all about how they were busted for trying to basically embiggen the crotches of the ski jumpers' suits to try and catch a little more air.

on tuesday i met one of the admins m for dinner so she could tell me why she briefly ended up dating two steves at the same time (she's absolutely a chaos magnet but didn't want to share this particular episode of her love life at work but i wanted to know and she clearly wanted to share). also on tuesday one of my pi's locked himself out of his office. heh. fortunately i have a key.

and then thursday i took a nice long walk at work with another admin m and one of the admins a because it was SO NICE outside (sunny and not super cold!) and we wanted to check out the dunkin donuts popup on campus.  my guess is they were there in advance of the super bowl and whatever tv ad they're going to premiere - it was a very 90s themed popup with 90s style swag but sadly no actual doughnuts.  that admin m is going to hawaii in i think july and i am SO JEALOUS.  i sent her a bunch of suggestions including "eat the poi bread.  it's purple".  she's a vegetarian tho so i can't in good conscience recommend the spam musubi.

on saturday (so, a week ago) my sister came back from florida - she stayed an extra week to work remote - and i picked her up at the airport, took her home, helped her shovel off her car, went to the grocery store with her, ordered chinese food, and watched red notice which was kind of fun and kind of silly and i think for the first time i found ryan reynolds exceptionally annoying.  usually i enjoy his schtick, or at least i do for most of the movie, but this time he was just grating the entire time.  mostly liked the rock tho, and gal gadot was fun.
