A travelpost unrelated to work! I scheduled two separate weeks for my summervacation. For my week in July, I wanted to travel to Spijkenisse in the South-West of the Netherlands, to visit The Bridges of Europe, an applied arts project by Robin Stam (2011-2013) who actually built the non-existing bridges that are featured on the backsides of Euro banknotes. When I checked out if there was anything else worth visiting nearby, I found a watertowerhotel in Dordrecht (the oldest city in Holland, 1120) from where I could explore wetland area The Biesbosch, that was also on my wishlist!
I had a lovely couple of days; I read on the train, cycled around on my rented bike, went on ferries and boattrips, and was spoiled with views and bubblebaths. On my way back I stopped in 's Hertogenbosch, birthplace of 14th century artist Hieronymus Bosch (aka Jheronimus or Jeroen), so I got some culture in as well. Here is a massive picspam of all the things.

Day 1: Eurobridges in Spijkenisse & Cycling in Dordrecht )

Day 2: Whisperboat through the Biesbosch wetland )

Day 3: Bubbelbaths, more cycling & Walking through the wetlands )

Day 4: Art & Food in 's Hertogenbosch (Hieronymus Bosch & Bosche Bollen!) )

The End; for now it's back to work (But there will be another summervacationweek in September:-)

I hit Price Chopper and the Bakery while I was downtown and got in a walk around the park. I hit Stewart’s on the way home.

I folded last night’s load of laundry and got two other loads washed, dried and folded (dog sheets and a load mom sent home with me); took the dogs for a short walk; baked chicken for the dog’s meals; cut up said chicken for the next several meals; hand-washed dishes; and scooped kitty litter.

I had to DNF a Kindle cozy, but managed to start and finish another.

Temps started out at 51.1(F) and more fog. Yes, I dressed warmly this morning before leaving the house. Temps reached 79.0. It was really nice out.

Facts: Ginger Ale

1.) Is a popular type of soda made with ginger. Many people drink ginger ale to relieve nausea, but you can also enjoy it as an everyday beverage. (Please, read the ingredients carefully. Some companies have no ginger in them or use so little that you cannot feel the bite from ginger.)

2.) Ginger ale often contains preservatives, like citric acid and sodium benzoate, as well as caramel color. (Canada Dry) Making it taste more like a lemon-line soda.

I can’t believe it’s August already! This was another no-shopping day until Pip wanted me to check Tractor Supply for cold medicine for cats (*head desk* one of our garage cats keeps sneezing lately; all I could find was immunity boost stuff) and I got in a walk around the park.

I filled my gas tank and hit the bank drive-thru on my way to visit my aunt. I picked up lunch from Subway on my way to mom’s.

I did two loads of laundry (both washed and dried, but only one folded), hand-washed dishes, ran a load in the dishwasher, cut up chicken for the dogs’ meals, placed two online orders (including Chewy, which will make the dogs happy), and scooped kitty litter. I made a ham steak with mashed potatoes and peas for supper.

I finished one Kindle cozy and started and finished another. And I spotted another fawn! Though not one of ours, sadly. This little guy was standing on the side of the road just outside the village where my mom lives and I spotted it on my way to her house. Thankfully it didn’t run into the road in front of me OR behind me (I checked the rearview mirror to make sure it stayed safe).

Temps started out at 50.0(F) and foggy. Another day I not only wore a sweatshirt out of the house, but a winter scarf and a jacket. Temps reached a glorious 75.6, with sunshine and a breeze. Honestly, a perfect day. If everyday could be like today I’d be so happy.

Facts: Fanta

1.) Fanta production was discontinued after the war, when the Coca-Cola Company regained control of the German plant, formula, and trademarks. Fanta was a temporary solution for the wartime situation, and was not part of the original Coca-Cola strategy. (Yeah, in order to avoid being labeled Nazi sympathizers Coca~Cola refused to sell Coke syrup to Germany during WWII.)

2.) Fanta is a colorful and vibrant brand that uses bright and cheerful colors, such as orange, yellow, green, and pink, in its products and packaging. Fanta is a brand that stands out and expresses its personality. (Honestly, this was never my fruit soda of choice. As a child I preferred Shasta as an adult Big K were my go to. Now I just mix juice and soda water.)

I had a pedicure this morning! I hit Agway (for dog treats) and Price Chopper (to pick up a couple things for mom) while I was downtown. I also picked up Chinese for lunch. I folded a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes, cut up chicken for the dogs’ meals, paid some bills online, and scooped kitty litter.

I finished a Kindle cozy and started another. I also typed in 2,900 more words on my fic!

Temps started out at 68.0(F), which was amusing since the high for the day was supposed to be mid-60s. So imagine my surprise when I saw that the temp ~11:30am had dropped to 59! I saw it reach 61.5 in the afternoon before it started going back down again. (Even weirder, I just looked at TWC app and it says today’s high is supposed to be 86. Where did that come from?!!) To make the day even more fun, it rained off and on most of the day. We need the rain, but very dreary. (According to Pip, the rain gauge showed 1.5" of rain.)

Facts: Dr Pepper

1.) Dr Pepper is one of the oldest sodas still available today, having been founded in 1885. Yes, that is even before Coca-Cola. (This was my mother's favorite soda. I like it well enough. The one flavor that I loved, they no longer have! The Coconut Version was delicious.)

2.) It's history starts at Morrison's Old Corner Drug Store in Waco, Texas in the early 1880s and named to impress a girl's father. (The "King of Beverages'" name is a mystery, though there are many tall tales surrounding the beverage. Once things is clear, there isn't any prune extract in the formula.)

Craft Kit Review: Pom Pom Trees

Jul. 31st, 2025 04:07 pm

[personal profile] spiralicious
Official Name: DIY Pom Pom Trees

Listed Price: $3

Age Rating: 6+

Description on Package: makes 2 trees - includes:pompoms, felt, plastic needle, thread, and cardboard

What it Actually Came With: instructions, 2 cardboard semi circles with adhesive on one edge, felt stars, pom poms in 2 sizes.

Notes: This was the kit that I hated the most when I opened it, but was one of my favorites when I was done. The picture on the packaging is misleading. It shows 2 "large" trees, when you are actually making 1 "large" and 1 small. The size of the packaging also leads you to believe the end product will be about as tall as a roll of toilet paper. The tall tree is under 3in tall. You can barely fit a wine cork under it. The small tree could be a party hat for Barbie, if you can get it to balance on the top of her head. The other thing that annoyed me was that there was nothing on the outside of the packaging that said it required a hot glue gun. I have several, but it feels like important information to know before purchase. Super simple craft, turn the cardboard semi circles into cones, glue the star to the top, glue pom poms to the cone until it's completely covered. It was very meditative. I really liked that the pom pom for the trees where in separate packages from each other within the packaging. Their pom poms are different sizes and slightly different colors and the topper stars are different sizes. (The large tree also comes with several small stars to glue on top of the pom poms when you are all done.) I did run out of pom poms before I was done on the big tree, but that was my fault. I didn't get the cone as tight as I should have, so it's a wide tree. Luckily, I managed to keep the bald spot to the back and the little tree had extra pom poms, so I was able to fill in some of the hole. Putting the pom poms on the little tree was a little awkward as I had to put it on the end of my thumb like a thimble while gluing tiny pom poms with hot glue. They are both really cute.

Craft Kit Review: Felt Wreaths

Jul. 31st, 2025 03:20 pm
spiralicious: Cereal Killer Mask (Default)
[personal profile] spiralicious
Official Name: DIY Felt Wreaths

Listed Price: $3

Age Rating: 6+

Description on Package: makes 2 wreaths

What it Actually Came With: instructions; 6 long strips of felt: 2 in light green, 2 in dark green, & 2 in black; 2 12in pieces of wire with the ends covered in hot glue for safety; 2 3in squares of red felt; 27 mini pom poms in rainbow assortment; 2ft long piece of white ribbon.

Notes: This was the most time consuming of all of the kits. The instructions are tiny, both the font and the pictures. They do great explaining the first half of creating the wreaths, cutting the felt strips into squares and putting them on the wired. After that, they get vague. They don't tell you how to finish off the wreath after you get the felt squares on the wire, they just tell you to "prepare the bow" with no instructions on how to cut the pieces from the red squares of felt, and then you just get a picture of the finished product. What takes so long to make this is first cutting 90 squares from your green & black felts for each wreath, then stringing them all on the wire. The instructions did say to cut the squares at 3/4in, but the felt strips are wider than that by a fair amount, so I just eyeballed where to cut to be about square. I still had enough felt strips for another wreath. The instructions also said to cut the wire down to 8in. I did not. Those extra inches gave me room to work and after I got things twisted into a circle to make the wreath, I twisted up the ends to make a hidden wire hanger. I did figure out how to make the bows from the picture. Mine are slightly larger than the finished examples wreath pictures, but it still only took 2/3 of one red square of felt to make both bows. I wasn't sure how the pom poms would look. The example shows only red, white, and light pink pom poms, but it gave us a bright rainbow assortment. Now that I have had some time to sit on it, it looks okay. Even covering the wreaths in pom poms, I have a 3rd of them left. Because it didn't give me any glue and I was worried about drying times, I used hot glue. So, so many glue threads on felt, but it worked great. I tied the ribbon to the metal hangers I made, and still have a third left. The wreaths themselves are sized perfect for a Barbie house. I think my favorite part of this one was that I have enough of everything except wire to make a 3rd wreath, so no fear of needing more material, had I screwed up.

Official Kit Name: Make Your Own Animal - Teddy Bear [on the packaging]
DIY Chenille Craft Kit (Bear) [on instructions]

Original Price: $4

Age Rating Listed on Package: 6+

Description on Package: 1 ct. Includes everything you need to make your own cuddly bear

What it Actually Came With: instructions, "15mm x 39 inches pipe cleaner" (a giant fuzxy pipe cleaner), 1 pair of eyes, 1 nose, a red hat & scarf (for the finished bear), 3 snowball pom poms (intended to be props for snowball fight), and 3ml of clear glue.

Notes: I did not expect this one to work. The picture of the bear on the package looks very awkward and until you opened the package, there was no indication of what you would be making the bear out of. The instructions were amazing. They were very clearly written in a nice big font with decently sized colored pictures of each step of bear construction. You basically twist the pipe cleaner around like you're making a balloon animal. My finished bear and the finished bear in the instructions are both very cute. Mine's tail is a bit bulky, but most of that is from bunching up and gluing down the loose fuzz that was coming off the end of the wires by the time I was done. It gives him stability. Putting the eyes and nose on were a bit tricky because you aren't just gluing them on, you are having to shove little stakes through the wires where they'll fit. The hat and scarf fit my finished bear perfectly. He is very soft and fuzzy, but very fragile, so he sits instead of standing.

Official Kit Name: Gingerbread House Activity

Original Price: $2

Age Rating on Package: 3+

Description on Package: 3 paper houses, foil sticker sheet, twine (24in)

What Was Actually in the Package: 3 small paper bags cut to be house shaped with a gingerbread house design outlined on the front to be colored in (approximately 5in x 4in x 2in); a foil sticker sheet full of images of candy, gingerbread people and animals, and a tree; 24in of red & white twine; a package of 9 red pom poms; and 4in tube of white glue.

Notes: There were no instructions aside from the computer rendered image on the packaging, not that is really needed it. I am fairly certain the pom poms and the glue were not supposed to come with it. I used a different decorating approach with each house. The first one, I decorated everything that looked like it was supposed to be piped on icing with white India ink and I did the dots, hearts, and candy cane striping with a red acrylic paint pen. I filled in the windows using a silver paint pen. And I decided to glue one of the red pom poms on the door knob. It's very sudate, but looks good.

With the second house, I tried to decorate it it more like a kid would using more colors of paint pens and as many stickers as I could fit on there. I had meant to try colored pencils or crayons on this one to see how they did on the bag material the house was made of, but they were not accessible at the time. The white paint pen did not get nearly the amount of coverage the India ink did. The stickers were surprisingly perfectly sized for decorating the house. Usually with these kinds of kits, they are either way too big or too small.

On the third house, I did pretty much the same thing as on the second house, except I stuck with a red and green stripping theme.

All three house came out good. There was exactly enough twine to tie all three houses shut. I have almost all the pom poms and glue leftover and 2 of the bigger stickers. It was a lot of fun. While they are intended to be shelf sitters, they would make good goodies bags.

I had a chiropractic appointment this morning. It was ~almost another no-shopping day, but I ended up stopping at the Feed Bag. I got in a walk around the park and I ran an errand for Pip, to pick up parts for the garage. (I rewarded myself with a McD’s smoothie.) I managed to get to mom’s around the usual time.

I washed and dried a load of whites (still need to be folded), hand-washed dishes, cut up chicken for the dogs’ meals, placed an online order, and scooped kitty litter. I made open-faced tomato and cheese (melted under the broiler) sandwiches for my supper and grilled steak for Pip’s.

I started and finished the next book in the Inn at Holiday Bay Kindle cozy series, and then started the next. They’re just so easy to read. Very little thought involved. I also typed in 1,000 words on my ‘new’ fic! (Only ~ 9,000 left to go! *g*)

Temps started out at 61.3(F) (it felt cool enough for me to wear a sweatshirt when I left the house) and reached 91.6.

Facts: RC Cola

1.) Royal Crown Cola was an instant sensation. RC Cola, as it is now called, was such a success that the company was eventually renamed Royal Crown Cola Co. By 1940, RC products were available in 47 of the 48 states. (I remember drinking this as a kid. Coke hurt my throat. Pepsi was too... Pepsi, but if I had to drink a cola, I would take this.)

2.) Launched in 1905, RC produced the first low-calorie diet cola (Diet Rite), the first caffeine-free diet cola (RC 100) and the first diet cherry cola (Diet Cherry RC). Other RC innovations include the all-aluminum beverage can and Royal Crown Draft cola, a premium cola made with pure sugar cane. (I still don't approve of diet sodas, but diet soda drinkers owe a nod to the Royal Crown Co.)

DNF and picture books )

And now the goal set!

Nadine Harris - Deepest Well. NF, psychology and trauma. While the information about traumatic events and their cumulative effects on health was interesting, I ran into the same problem I always do with psych books. Not enough case studies/details. I really wasn't interested in the blather about her personal life, or the multiple chapters devoted to getting a clinic set up and so on. More memoir than case studies and that's not what I wanted. 5/10

Hannah Maehrer - Assistant to the Villain. #1 in series. I love this recent trend of books from the perspective of someone who works for the "villain". Hench was another favorite in the genre. Enjoyed this very much, though it did feel fanficcy at times, and I really don't think there were enough clues pointing to the identity of the Actual Problem. Have bought, though, as well as the second in the series waiting on my TBR. 8/10.

Boyd and Beth Morrison - Lawless Land. #1 in series. Now, I love me some medieval drama, and this had that in spades. The story itself was great, no troubles there, but there was so much telling where there should have been showing. 6/10, will not continue.

Terry Pratchett - Mrs Bradshaw's Handbook. I had some confusion on this one, as I had it on my "owned" list but definitely didn't have it on my shelf. Finally found it buried in my "ebooks to read" folders. XD A lovely addition to the Discworld's world, great illustrations and fun facts. Not something I'd want to buy, since I'm not a completionist, but a grand time for those curious about exactly what sort of travel book the woman from Raising Steam would have written. 8/10.

Eliot Stein - Custodians of Wonder. NF, history. Some individual sections of this were more interesting than others, but that's always the way in a NF book with discrete topics. Overall a good look at some people with skills/training/jobs that are on the verge of disappearing. The Swedish night watchman was a particular favorite, as was the Cuban cigar factory reader. 7/10.

Evie Woods - Lost Bookshop. Bit of a slow and dreamy read, but that really fit with the book overall. At no point was I actually bored or tempted to move on to a different book, it just wasn't a "can't put down" sort of read for me. 6/10.

Tanya Guerrero - Cat's People. I had a note in my tbr file that said "be careful about cat", as the book blurb itself said the cat gets sick. Fortunately, it didn't become one of my "hurled book across room" notes.
Spoiler for people like me who get upset about cats in peril. There are actually two moments of peril: A. Physical. The cat interrupts an attack/assault on one of the characters and the attacker grabs him by the neck. He isn't hurt much, just really scared. and B. Illness. It's toward the very end, and the cat is found ill. He's found relatively quickly and immediately rushed to a vet where he gets diagnosed with kidney disease. He's treated and taken in by one of the characters.
Lovely book about caring for a stray cat, found family, and the interactions between strangers that become more. 8/10.

Daniel O'Malley - Royal Gambit. #4 Checquy Files. I just love this series. The characters, the world-building, the variety of powers and skills. Overall, fantastic. Finished in two days and only because I had to sleep at some point. XD 10/10, to buy when my fun budget refills.

WOOHOO! Have achieved my expanded goal of 15 complete books read! Shall we push it to 25? Let's see if I can make it! Still four months to go!

I've broken 75 books already! I'm close to my goal of 100, so maybe I will surpass that. Or, perhaps when I get to the end of one or two of the series I'm currently reading, I'll return to fanfic so I can complete my comment bingo card. Or maybe I'll catch up on all the tv I've been leaving hanging. (Resident Alien, I'm looking at you.)

Today was a no-shopping day!! But I got in a walk around the park while I was downtown. I spent time with mom and stopped at the library on the way home to return and pick up books. I did a load of dog sheets that got washed, dried and folded, hand-washed dishes, cut up chicken for the dogs’ meals, scooped kitty litter, and showered.

I started and finished another Kindle cozy and finally started Heir, Apparently. I also dug through my hand-written WIPs to find something to work on and found a surprise FINISHED FIC in the Jessica Fletcher, Agent of SHIELD series! I gave it a read-through to remind myself what the heck I’d written and just need to type it in. (50 hand-written pages, so it will be ~10,000 words typed in.)

Temps started out at 68.5(F) and reached 90.3. It was hot. Today (Wednesday) is also supposed to be hot, but tomorrow (Thursday) we have 49% chance of rain with a high of 68. 68!! In July!!

Facts: Moxie Soda

1.) It was created around 1876 by Augustin Thompson in Lowell, Massachusetts. This sweet soda tastes a bit like root beer, but it also has a bitter aftertaste. Its unique flavor comes from gentian root extract, which is a very bitter plant part used in herbal medicine. (I've never had it. Sorry, it just never spread to Texas. Would I try it? Sorry, no, I no longer drink soda or any kind.)

2.) The name "Moxie" has also become a word in American English. It means having lots of energy, determination, and courage. (I heard that term often when listening to elders talk about their youth. 'Janice, we knew she would make it, because she had a lot of spunk and Moxie.)
