Challenge #7

In your own space, tell us about 3 fandom resources, spaces, or communities you use or enjoy. (One or two is fine, especially if you're in a smaller fandom!) Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Archive of our Own is a fabulous resource for fanfiction writers.  It’s well set out and relatively easy to use, I’m in the process of gradually exporting my writings from Fanfiction.net to AO3, as I keep hearing opinions that Fanfiction.net seems to be winding down.  I love that AO3 is a not for profit organisation and that it’s run by fans for fans.   I love that it provides protection and legal advocacy for fanfiction writers and their works.  It also seems to attract the best of the best; I’ve found so many long, beautifully written fanfics there.

Deviant art is where I house all my fan art works, it’s just great to have everything in one place.  It’s another site that’s relatively easy to use, and although I’m not active there in terms of communicating with others, It is an arty rabbit hole that’s very easy to fall down!

I couldn’t complete today’s challenge without mentioning my online home, Livejournal.  My journal is 11 years old and through it, I have met so many wonderful friends – many of whom have become real life friends.  My journal is a mixture of fanworks, personal musings, memes and Jensen Ackles appreciation.  More recently, it has also become the place where I report the adventures and misadventures of the two newest additions to my family; Juniper and Nutmeg the ridiculously spoiled houserabbits!

I'm not saying that I spend a lot of time on Livejournal, but my end of year stats said that to read all the posts I'd made at my journal in 2021 would take 22 hours... *blushes*

So, we thought 2020 was bad, then 2021 stepped up to the plate. In some ways it was a little better than 2020, and in other ways it was profoundly worse.

The Supernatural fandom, and fandom in general was dealt an irretrievable blow in April 2021 when we lost [livejournal.com profile] jj1564.  The enthusiasm, friendship and joy that she brought to the fandom and to her friends is sorely missed and will never be forgotten.

But this post is not here to dwell on the negatives, I’m only going to focus on the fandom positives of the year. So, here goes…

So, 2020. What can you say? Well, nothing polite, that’s for sure.

As for everyone, the year panned out to be one great big steaming cowpat. With all the Covid chaos, fires, floods, plagues of locusts, Brexshit, and to top it all, the end of Supernatural.

But this post is not here to dwell on the negatives (if I did, I’d be breaching the Lj word limit, no doubt), I’m only going to focus on the fandom positives of the year. So, here goes…

I managed to write more fandom words this year than last year. Last year’s word count was quite low, because of the studying I was doing early in 2019 (27,003). I was aiming to be up to about the 30,000 this year, but inspiration has been a little hard to come by, and in the end I finished up on 27,690. So, yes, a bit disappointing, but more than last year so we’ll call it a win anyway!

Challenge #2
On your own space, talk about your fannish history.  Leave a comment at this post saying you did it.  Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Probably the funniest thing about my fannish history is that I became a member of a fandom, quite organically, before I realised such a thing even existed!

I became aware of fanfiction back in the early 2000's by accidentally stumbling across Lord of the Rings fanfiction.  I read it avidly, although that's all I did.  I didn't feel the compulsion to write or comment, or interact in any way.

Then in 2009, I discovered Supernatural, and it inspired me in a way tthat I've never been inspired before.  At the end of May, I wrote my first Supernatural fanfiction and posted it to Fanfiction.net.  After a couple of days, I had accumuated a handful of reviews which I responded to, and there and then, a few of my very first 'fandom' relationships were born.

Now, almost 10 years and 850 stories and drabbles, and countless fan arts later, my involvement in the fandom has increased exponentially.  Every friend I made led to more friends, every story I wrote led to more stories and more creativity, every convention I went to led to more conventions.

It has, without a doubt, been 10 of the best years of my life.

I've always said that Supernatural was my first fandom and it will be my only one. I know there are other fandoms around, and they're great groups of people representing great shows, films, books etc.  But having experienced the joy that the Supernatural fandom has given me, I fear that a second throw of the dice will be a pale imitation.

Now that we are facing the end of Supernatural, I believe the fandom will live on in one form or another, and the friends I have made through fandom will be with me for life, so it will certainly live on through them.

For me it will be Supernatural forever!

After the madness of 2018, I was expecting 2019 to be a much quieter, less busy year.

And of course, I was hopelessly, gloriously wrong about that!

There may not have been travels to Iceland and broken limbs to contend with, but there were six cons, European travels, lots of art, lots of writing and, yes, beautiful fandom madness!

2018 was a very significant year for me.  As you are all no doubt aware, and sick of hearing about, this was a milestone year for me.  I turned 50 in April, and my plan was to make this milestone year a year to remember.  I had a number of plans and special events planned, some fandom-related and some not.

Our poor boys are really suffering for their good cause.  Not that we're not amused an entertained by it at all.  No really, we're not ...

$60,000 raised so far - but Jensen's wrecked knees have got to be worth more than that!

Here's the link if you wanted to add to the total or spread the word ... I for one, CAN'T WAIT to see all the pictures/video that's going to come out of Sunday's madness!

I'm back from a brilliant weekend in Paris at a Spartacus convention.  It was a busy weekend, but with the usual round of photo ops, autographs and social events, it was very familiar, even if it wasn't for once the Supernatural fandom.

I'll post my pictures and some blurb here, hopefully tomorrow.  Unfortunately I bought back a souvenir other than pictures and autographs - and it was nothing so pleasant ... I seem to have picked up the French cold from hell, and after a 4.30 am start this morning (for a 7 am flight), plus an early morning traipse through Charles de Gaulle airport, which is possibly the biggest airport on the planet ... it certainly felt like it this morning after I walked through six terminals to get to my gate, I'm barely functioning!  I'm running hot and cold, congested to the hilt and ache all over, so I'm heading off to my bed in an attempt to get fit enough for work tomorrow!

Love you all - sending virtual germ-free hugs!

Thirteen years ago, on the 13th of September, a little show aired on our screens.

And WHAT a show!

Thirteen years on ...

It has changed lives
It has SAVED lives
It has brought friends old and new together
It has inspired creators across the globe
It has given us the strength to always keep fighting
It has reassured us that we are not alone
It gives us the confidence to perform Random Acts of kindness
It reminds us that family don't end with blood
And of course ...
It gave us Sam, Dean and Castiel.

THANK YOU SUPERNATURAL!

Okay, so most of my F/list has done this and I though, 'why not?'.  Most of you have probably heard this story or portions of it at one time or another, but hey ho ... reading isn't compulsory!

Dear Sam and Dean

Christmas Day 2009 was a particularly memorable one for me.  It didn't snow, we didn't go anywhere exotic, and no-one invited us to any great big family parties.

In fact, as Christmases went, it was pretty ordinary, but despite that it is a day that will always live in my most precious memories.

Because it was the day I found you ...

Day 15 - In your own space, write a love letter to Fandom in general, to a particular fandom, to a trope, a relationship, a character, or to your flist/circle/followers. Share your love and squee as loud as you want to

I’ve often waxed lyrical about the joys of fandom at my journal, and I never need another excuse to do that, because there’s so much to love about fandom!

Fandom isn’t just a group of people who happen to like the same TV show or film, or book. We’re a family; a community.  We’re a community of like-minded people who all love the same thing and who can openly share their likes, loves, and passions with each other.

And like any community, we interact, we have fun, we take care of the more vulnerable members of our community, we support each other’s dreams and cheerlead each other’s challenges.

But fandom isn’t just an abstract thing; to me it’s a place.  It’s a place with no borders, where us fans, regardless of or race or sexuality or whatever other characteristics we may have can go to belong, to be welcomed into the arms of a community that is accepting and fun; a community that GETS us.

Somehow, friendships made through fandom are easy; easier than friendships forged in real life through work, or school or location.  Real life friendships have to form and evolve.  When you start out, you’re just two disparate strangers working for the same organisation, or living in the same street.  Friendships made through fandom, on the other hand, begin with you both knowing something about each other - what you love and what you have in common. And although those friendships may start out as something as simple and superficial as a shared love of the same TV show, or the same book, they quickly grow into something far more meaningful.

Many of my fandom friendships have outgrown the computer screen and crossed over into real life, and those friendships have given me more joy than I could ever put into a simple post like this.

Members of fandom are often those of us that society thinks of as ‘weird’ or a bit odd, or on the edge of ‘normal’.  A lot of us probably suffered through school, and have never been regarded as 'cool' or in with the ‘in’ crowd; but in fandom, ‘weirdness’ is embraced, individuality is celebrated, imagination is admired.  Fandom is where you can be yourself, where you can be all that you can be, and more.

The sheer depth of talent and skill within fandom is mindboggling.  To be able to immerse yourself in such a deep and welcoming pool of creativity is a delight and a privilege, and what makes it so special is that all these amazing fanworks, whether they be inspirational art, gripping stories, entertaining videos etc, are all done just for the sheer pleasure of creating them, not for any financial gain.

So yes, I never need any excuse to write a love letter to fandom; everything I’ve written here comes from my personal experience.  Fandom has enabled me to learn new skills, and to rediscover and develop old ones. It has given me friends from all over the world.  Those friends know who they are and how much they mean to me, and if I can give back to them and to fandom generally a fraction of the love and happiness they’ve given me, then my time in fandom will have been very well spent.

Day 4 - In your own space, create a fannish wishlist. No limits on size or type of fanwork; just tell us what you’d like to see

This is a diffcult one because I often don't  know what I want until I see it!

But I always welcome recs for lovely long J2 slash/hurt comfort fics, especially ones in the vein of my absolute favourites such as The Play Nice Proviso and Just One Breath (yes, I'm definitely a non-AU girl!)

There is nothing as exciting as someone doing some artwork for one of your stories, and I often illustrate my stories myself, but I have a lot of fics and not a lot of time, so if anyone would like to make a banner for any of my stories, I'd be a very happy and grateful bunny!

dizzojay: (Default)
Day 3 - In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create

I never cease to be amazed by the creativity and talent that I see every day in fandom in general, but more specifically in the Supernatural fandom where I am active.

I have been fortunate to be on the receiving end of some of that incredible talent, and so here are three of the many wonderful fanworks that I own ...

Firstly, a brilliant t-shirt designed by my friend [livejournal.com profile] amberdreams

It was designed to commemorate our first trip to Jus in Bello in Rome as a group of fandom friends in 2013, and I think it's fabulous.  If you squint hard enough, you cam see Amber, me and our other pals up in the cheap seats- really enjoying the view!

Secondly, by [livejournal.com profile] milly_gal , a beautiful Dean Winchester themed necklace:

You can see the lovely green beads, the colour of Dean's eyes, and all the little charms that depict everything that is so Dean - Baby, a cassette, the Samulet, a very moosey Sammy, and his gun.

And third, a little treat to myself.  I saw these two little dudes on the internet, and I mean - who could resist?

They came from Etsy from a hugely talented  crafter called Mistyfigs, and as the nearest I am ever going to get to handling a half-naked Sam and Dean, they are very welcome additions to my Funko collection!

Day 2 - In your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, crazy times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone.

Wow.  I've sat here like a daft lump for ages trying to sift through my treasure-trove of fandom memories to find one to recall here, and it's not an easy task!

But, I'm going to go with a specific memory of Asylum 14 back in 2015.

A group of us were at the hotel waiting for the start of Jason Manns Saturday night concert where we knew Jensen was going to be singing.  He had never sung at a concert in the UK before, and although a few of us had been fortunate enough to see Jensen sing before in Rome, most people in the room hadn't and as a result the excitement was palpable.

It was magical to share such a special occasion with great friends, and we were all varying degrees of elated, thrilled and overcome with emotion by the end of the concert.

I love this picture; me with [livejournal.com profile] dean_hugs_sammy , [livejournal.com profile] xlittleangx , [livejournal.com profile] edina_clouds128, [livejournal.com profile] milly_gal , [livejournal.com profile] sasha_dragon .  It was taken while we were waiting for the concert to begin, and I think it perfectly sums up, firstly, the anticipation of the occasion and, secondly, the joy and closeness that we all share as friends brought together by the love and crazy that is fandom.

So, 2017 came and went.  Like a pie in front of Dean Winchester, it vanished in a flash.

From a personal point of view, it was a year of consolidation.  Consolidating myself in my new job, and settling into my new work team, who are a fantastic - and very sociable - group of ladies.  Dapplegrey Art had one of its best years ever. Despite doing far fewer shows, mainly because of an unprecedented number of date clashes, the shows I did do were really worth doing, both financially and spiritually!

In terms of fandom, it's been another brilliant year.  I attended two Supernatural conventions and once again and got to molest meet J2!  One of the highlights of my Spn year was having the privilege of meeting David Haydn-Jones and Adam Fergus (aka the British Men of Letters) at the beginning of their convention journeys, which I don't doubt will be long and successful journeys for both of them.  The Spn low this year was the demise of Rogue Events which ended as ignominiously as you might expect for such a chaotic, badly run outfit, and left a large number of people (myself included) heavily out of pocket.

I also went to three general conventions (Sci Fi Weekender, London Film and Comic-Con and Fanfest Heroes and Villains) over the year which were all a blast, and which ended up with me getting a kiss from John Cleese - and how's that for a highlight?

Although my absent muse is still very much on a go-slow, I'm delighted that I managed to write quite a lot more words than I did in 2016, 26,611 compared to 21,613. Whilst it's not a figure to go mad about, it's a decent increase, and I'll happily take what I can get!
The fun stuff ... )

Day 4 - The meaning behind your Tumblr name

There's nothing very exciting to tell ...

My Tumblr name is the same as my Livejournal name, Dizzojay.

Dizzo is a nickname based on my surname that I've had for years, long before I joined fandom and I'm just Dizzo on Fanfiction.net which was my first fandom online home.

When I decided to join Livejournal, there was already a Dizzo on there, so I added my first initial, J, or Jay.

Ever since then, I've been Dizzojay on most of the online platforms I've joined, including Tumblr, which I no longer use or hardly ever visit because there's just too many crazies over there for my liking!

Day 3

Originally posted by [livejournal.com profile] sasha_dragon, [livejournal.com profile] wings128, and dugindeep

Here

These ladies make a very valid point in this piece, that the nature of fandom is changing.  It's a slow, insidious process, but I can notice the difference from the six years that I've been in fandom.

Feedback is the lifeblood of creativitiy, and creativity is the lifeblood of fandom.  Without feedback we are, as cherie_morte so beautifully put it, 'just shouting into a void'. I'm only active in the Supernatural fandom, so I can't say if this is a universal trend or just one within our fandom, but it's a sad one in any case.

A lot of people do seem to be migrating over to Twitter and Tumblr.  I won't be one of them.  Although I have accounts which I rarely use on both, I also loathe them both.  I dislike the impersonalness (is that even a word??) of those platforms, and the brevity which they encourage, to the point that I don't actually even get the point of them.

When you have put your heart and soul into writing a story, or creating art, you want to know what people think.  What do they particularly like about it?  What do they think you could have done better?  Did it make them laugh?  Did it make them cry?  Did it provoke thought?   This kind of feedback is the fuel that keeps the engine of fandom running.

A one-click A03 kudos, or 'like' on Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, while a decent gesture which is nevertheless appreciated, is an easy get-out which removes that interaction; that chance to brighten someone's day with a positive comment.  It could be the difference between a writer being inspired to carry on, or giving up.

That's why I love Livejournal.  Quite apart from the fact that I've met an inordinate number of extraordinary people through it, it promotes interaction.  It doesn't give you the one-click easy option of a 'like' button.  It's a platform for giving and sharing and making friends, not just for 'shouting into the void'.

So I'll echo these lovely ladies and say, let's keep commenting, keep reviewing, and leaving that feedback.  Whether it be here on Livejournal, or on A03, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, or wherever - when someone's spent a month writing a 10,000 word story, surely they deserve two minutes of your time to say thank you.

I'll be the first to admit that I haven't been as active on reading and commenting of late, real life has seen to that; but even if it takes me a month to get round to it, I always try to leave a few words of encouragement whenever I read something.  Reading these posts has made me even more determned to stand by that pledge.

So please, let's keep our wonderful fandom active and motivated.  We all owe this fandom so much, we've all benefited from being part of it; so let's pay a little forward, and make sure everyone else gets as much joy and inspiration from our fandom as we all have.

It's the least we can do!

This ...
