Challenge #15

How Did the Fandom Snowflake Challenge Go?

Another really enjoyable challenge.  As I said right at the beginning, it’s a great little reset, and gets my brain working again after the stagnation of the Christmas break.

I lost a little momentum toward the end as I spent a few days visiting my parents and deliberately didn’t take my laptop as I wanted to concentrate on them, not my screen, so I missed challenge 13 and 14, but overall, I’m happy with this year’s challenge, and sad it’s at an end.

Thanks, as always, to the mods who work so hard to bring us this lovely little event!

See you next year!

Challenge #12

Make an appreciation post to those who enhance your fandom life. Appreciate them in bullet points, prose, poetry, a moodboard, a song... whatever moves you!

It can never be denied that the main factor in my wonderful fandom experience is the friends I’ve made

Whether they are friends who have crossed over from online to real life friends or those who still live in my laptop, the joy of shooting the breeze with an awesome bunch of people from all over the world is something I will always be grateful to fandom for.

Thanks to my fandom friends, I’ve gained confidence, I’ve learned new skills, I’ve travelled, I’ve humiliated myself (GISH, I’m looking at you), I’ve met famous people and I’ve found myself in ways that I’d never even considered before.

I’ve laughed with you guys and I’ve cried with you guys, and I can’t find the words to tell you how much I appreciate you all.

Therefore, I have decided to abandon words, and demonstrate my appreciation through the medium of Jared, Jensen and Misha...

I've been away visiting family for a few days, so I've fallen behind on the Snowflake a little, so this is me - catching up!

In your own space, grant someone's wish from Challenge #5

So, for this challenge, I decided to grant some wishes for a long standing friend, both here and on Livejournal:

[personal profile] fairyniamh

I have commented and given kudos on some of your wonderful works over on AO3, and as time permits, I'll definitely get to reading some more.
And here's the hug that you asked for. I would love to provide a real, in person, hug, but as we are separated by an ocean, here's a virtual hug provided by three lovely gentlemen instead. The love behind it remains the same as a real hug!

Challenge #10: Big Mood (Board)

CHOOSE SOMETHING YOU LOVE AND CREATE A MINI MOOD COLLECTION OF THREE (or more) ITEMS THAT EVOKE YOUR FEELINGS ABOUT IT. You don’t have to limit yourself to visual media, or collect the items into a special format like a square (though you can if you’d like).

So for this challenge, I thought I would concentrate on something that is prominent in my mind at the moment. My first convention of the year is hurtling toward me, only three months away.

Those who know me well know I operate almost exclusively in the Supernatural fandom, and Supernatural conventions are my happy place.

That's where I can be me. I can meet up with the fabulous friends I've made through fandom. I can catch up with Supernatural's awesome cast. I can create art for autographs. I get to travel and broaden my horizons - in recent years, apart from my homeland of the UK, my Supernatural travels have taken me to France, Germany and Italy.

So yes, this is a happy, joyful convention mood board...

Talk about your favorite tropes in media or transformative works. (Feel free to substitute in theme/motif/cliche if "trope" doesn't resonate with you.)

I guess my go to trope in fan fiction is Hurt/Comfort.

Top 10 Challenge

For this challenge, I decided to go for something a little different, and so I have done a top ten of my favourite places in the UK.

So, here goes…

In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, a wish list of sorts.

My first wish - Inspiration… my fic writing has been in the doldrums for ages, it would be great to get a flash of inspiration and produce a couple of fics that I’m proud of

Speaking of inspiration, I’d like the inspiration to lose the weight I put on over Christmas!

Secondly, I'd love for some of my fics to be read and loved again, so if you can find the time to visit my AO3, and have a little browse, and maybe leave some kudos or feedback, that would be wonderful!

Lastly, I just want all good things for the people I care about (and I include those of you that live in my laptop in that statement).

Day 4 - Any website that you like, be it fanfiction, art, social media, or something a bit more eccentric!

I think I’m going to have to be woefully unimaginative here and go for AO3.

There can’t be a single user on this platform that isn’t familiar with the archive, and It’s just such a great, well-maintained platform to enjoy fanfic but also to upload it.

Fanfiction.net used to be my other favourite fanfic resource, but that’s too glitchy now, and riddled with bots. In that regard AO3 never lets me down, and when I get a comments, they're clearly written by a human, and the way things are on the internet right now, that's a big bonus!

Write a love letter to fandom. It might be to fandom in general, to a particular fandom, favourite character, anything at all.

I’ve often waxed lyrical about the joys of fandom at my journal, and I never need another excuse to do that, because there’s so much to love about fandom!

Fandom isn’t just a group of people who happen to like the same TV show or film, or book. We’re a family; a community.  We’re a community of like-minded people who all love the same thing and who can openly share their likes, loves, and passions with each other.

And like any community, we interact, we have fun, we take care of the more vulnerable members of our community, we support each other’s dreams and cheerlead each other’s challenges.

But fandom isn’t just an abstract thing; to me it’s a place.  It’s a place with no borders, where us fans, regardless of or race or sexuality or whatever other characteristics we may have can go to belong, to be welcomed into the arms of a community that is accepting and fun; a community that GETS us.

Somehow, friendships made through fandom are easy; easier than friendships forged in real life through work, or school or location.  Real life friendships have to form and evolve.  When you start out, you’re just two disparate strangers working for the same organisation, or living in the same street.  Friendships made through fandom, on the other hand, begin with you both knowing something about each other - what you love and what you have in common. And although those friendships may start out as something as simple and superficial as a shared love of the same TV show, or the same book, they quickly grow into something far more meaningful.

Many of my fandom friendships have outgrown the computer screen and crossed over into real life, and those friendships have given me more joy than I could ever put into a simple post like this.

Members of fandom are often those of us that society thinks of as ‘weird’ or a bit odd, or on the edge of ‘normal’.  A lot of us probably had a rough time at school and have never been regarded as 'cool' or in with the ‘in’ crowd; but in fandom, ‘weirdness’ is embraced, individuality is celebrated, imagination is admired.  Fandom is where you can be yourself, where you can be all that you can be, and more.

And that is why I will always love fandom!

Challenge #2: Pets of Fandom

Loosely defined! Post about your pets, pets from your canon, anything you want!

Oh, you’re going to regret challenging me to write about my pets! 😉

My pets are two very spoiled house rabbits. They are littermates (I hesitate to say siblings because I think there may be different fathers involved, so half siblings) and they came from a rabbit rescue sanctuary here in the UK. We got them when they were 16 weeks old, and they will be five in March.

They’re free roam in the living room, and out in the back garden when the weather’s nice – that’s because we have to sit out there to supervise them and keep an eye for predators.

My handsome little boy is Nutmeg, he’s a grumpy little ratbag plus he’s a jumper and an explorer. Since we’ve had him, he’s been up on the couch, the windowsill, the coffee table, various boxes we have around the place for them to play in, and on one memorable occasion, up on the dining table.

His beautiful 'sister' is Juniper. She’s much more sedentary than her brother. She’s all about the food and the comfort, a real lady of leisure. She’s very sweet and loving, and will sit around being fussed and loved while her brother squirms away like we’re dirty! Juniper was named in tribute to jj1564 whose name was June. We got the bunnies three months after June’s passing.

I’ve always loved rabbits, and have several throughout my life, but these are my first in the age of Social Media, so these two have their own Insta and their own Youtube channel.

I’ve always been a vocal supporter of rabbit welfare, and even more so now that house rabbits are becoming more of a thing, and knowledge of them and their needs is improving.

Here are just a few pointers as to why rabbits, although the third most popular pet in the UK (may well be similar in other countries), are also the most misunderstood, and as a result many of them live miserable, lonely and unhealthy lives:

  • Contrary to popular belief, rabbits are not good starter pets for children. Rabbits generally don’t like being picked up and held (they’re prey animals and picking up is a predation trigger). Children can often be noisy and unpredictable, something else that rabbits don’t do well with.
  • Rabbits can live upwards of ten years. I’ve known of rabbits to make it to fourteen years of age.
  • They’re active and require a lot of space. A hutch is not sufficient for them.
  • They are social animals and do better in pairs or groups than alone.
  • They have a level of intelligence similar to a domestic cat so they need attention and stimulation. They require toys and hidey holes, plus an environment gives them security and the freedom to engage in natural behaviours.
  • They’re nibblers and that can’t be stopped, so nibblesome stuff has to be kept out of their way, or protected from them
  • From a veterinary point of view, they are classed as exotic pets, and so veterinary care may be costly. It’s always best to find a rabbit savvy vet as they have complex needs to keep them healthy including annual vaccinations

And that’s just for starters!

So it anyone you know mentions ‘getting a rabbit for the kids’, please show them my post!

Anyway, that's it from Nutmeg and Juniper...

Signing off!

Challenge #1

The Icebreaker Challenge: Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it.

I’m delighted that Snowflake Challenge is back!  New year can sometimes be such a grim time with manky weather and long nights.  The Snowflake always gives me such a great little positivity boost during that dreary time and January wouldn’t be the same without it!

So fandom-wise, I'm still mainly active in the Supernatural fandom although my participation has diminished significantly, I still seem to be inspired to produce a fair amount of traditional art, plus I seem to be going to more conventions than ever!  Best of all, the friendships I made through the Spn fandom haven’t just lasted the distance, they seem to have grown stronger!

Anyway, in terms of fandom information, mine is mostly the same as previous years:

All of my fan fiction can be found at Fanfiction.net and AO3

All of my fan art, both digital and traditional can be found at Deviantart

I’m still present on Livejournal. I’ve always described Livejournal as my online home, and it’s sad to see that it’s such an empty shadow of its former self.  However, I’ve got too many wonderful memories of that place to ever give up on it entirely.  I have a back up mirror account at Dreamwidth where I cross post from Livejournal

I used to have a Twitter account which was mostly based in fannish stuff, but I deleted my account last year for the hellscape it became. I’ve been playing in the Blue Sky sandbox instead and feel much more at home there!

So that's me :)

Challenge #15

Talk about an unexpected joyous moment you experienced last year.

How are we at the end of Snowflake 2025 already?

There were lots of nice moments last year, but there is one standout moment, that I have unforgettable photographic evidence for!

Challenge #14

In your own space, create your own fandom challenge. Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Hmm, I’ve had to think about this one, and I’ve eventually come up with this…

The Snowflake Challenge is all about positivity, so in that same vein, my challenge is tell us about your happy place, or at least one of your happy places.  A place, either physical or virtual, that brings you joy, or peace, or just good old-fashioned contentment.

And secondly only if you want to, no pressure, incorporate your happy place into a fanwork as or when the muse takes you.  Maybe link it back to this post.

I’ll start:

One of my happy places is at conventions with my fandom family, but I’ve already written in this Snowflake challenge about the joy that conventions and fandom bring me, so I’m going in a completely different direction here.

In the autumn of 2024, I went away for a few days with my husband, the long-suffering Mr Dizzo, to Stratford upon Avon, here in the UK.

On the first full day we were there, we had been walking around the town and we stopped off at a coffee shop and bought a couple of lattes and cakes.

The weather was beautiful with cloudless skies.  It was warm enough not to need a coat, but mild enough not to get hot and bothered, so we sat outside the shop.

On that lovely morning, we sat and drunk our nice coffee, soaking up the atmosphere of this amazing town with Shakespeare’s house right opposite us.  There was a busker playing good music a little way away, and we sat, chatted, enjoyed our drinks, enjoyed each other’s company, listened to the music, people watched, and lived in the moment.

It had been a long time since I felt that relaxed and contented.

I will, no doubt, go back to Stratford upon Avon again because it is one of my happy places.  We may even go back to that same coffee shop, but on that one day, the stars aligned and gave me the perfect experience.

I have a weekend with no commitments coming up and so have time to spend, so let’s see if I can convince my muse to write a fanfic about the Winchester Boys in Stratford upon Avon!

 Challenge #13

Interact with someone in fandom you haven't talked with before.

The beauty of the Snowflake Challenge is that I've had the chance to interact with lots of new and unfamiliar people through the comments on my posts, and my comments on theirs!

I hope we can continue that connection throughout the coming years :)

Challenge #11

In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme.

I’m going to write about the humour within Supernatural.

Supernatural is by definition a show that has elements of drama, horror, tragedy and pathos.  Some of its themes are dark and painful, others are deeply entrenched in family, friendship and love.

But for me, the episodes of Supernatural I love the most are the funny ones.  Jensen (and by extension, Dean) is a born comedian, and Sam and Dean make such a perfect double act with Dean as the clown and Sam as the straight man.

The humour within Supernatural can be brief and nuanced, such as Dean stuffing his face full of caramels or his infamous death by taco in Mystery Spot, and then it can be all-out belly-laugh hilarious, such as with scaredy-cat Ghost sickness Dean or Dean corrupting Castiel in his favourite den of iniquity; ‘you full-on rebelled against God. Iniquity is one of the perks…’ classic Dean line.

I’ve noticed that within the fanfiction sphere, the darker, sadder and heavier themes are very much the default themes, and they’re great.  I enjoy a good dose of hurt and drama as long as it’s not too dark.

However, a good humorous story, or crackfic is just an absolute tonic for me.

It’s my favourite genre to write.  With his smart mouth, total lack of shame, and his childlike glee in certain situations, Dean is a gift for a humour writer.  Not to mention Sam’s constant exasperation, and Castiel’s constant naivete as a bonus.  Then of course, there’s Crowley.  He’s Crowley, and he’s Brit with all the acerbic snark you associate with British humour.

Just for fun, here’s a couple humour fics that I really enjoyed writing:

Bunker Brother

Hell's Kitchen

I hope you enjoy!

Challenge #10

In your own space, talk about one of your fandom firsts. This could be your first fandom, your first fandom friend, the first fanwork you created, the first fanwork you interacted with... The options are endless!

So, I’m going to talk about my first convention.

I discovered the supernatural fandom in early 2010. In late 2010, I met a friend via Fanfiction.net, and we discovered that we only lived about ten miles apart. So, we had a couple of real life meet ups and during those meet ups she occasionally mentioned to me these things called conventions that she’d attended.

I’d heard of conventions in a broad sense, but wasn’t really familiar with what happened at them or who went to them.

Eventually, she talked me into attending the next convention in the UK, Asylum 7, with her. The convention was October 2011 and I was excited to find out what it was all about. I was also invited that Julian was one of the guests and I was going to get the opportunity to ‘hug Death’. Who could turn down an opportunity like that?

So the convention came, and I loved every second of it. I did indeed hug Death, and he was an absolute sweetie. I told him that he was my very first ever convention photoshoot and he seemed more excited about that than I did!

Since that fateful day, I’ve been to probably about forty conventions (who’s counting), many of them still with that same friend, I’ve met Jared, Jensen and Misha multiple times, and my convention-going has crossed borders into Italy, France and Germany.

I went to that first convention all those years ago to please my friend and because I was curious, and I am so very, very glad that I did!

Here I am, proudly hugging Death! )
