It's been a fabulous few days, with a trip to Vencie which included me having a birthday there, then a train journey down to Rome for Jus in Bello convention.

I got back to the UK on Tuesday, and I'm still easing myself back into real life!

This post will focus on my Venice trip because i haven't scanned my JIB photos yet, and if I posted everything here, you'd probably die of old age before you finished reading it!
So a trip to Venice was exciting because I'd never been there before, and having a birthday in Venice was awesome.  And having both of those things surrounded by great friends was priceless!

I was in Venice with amberdreams heavenli24 herminekurotowa Natalie, Chris, Ma Lou, Stephanie, Wendy, and Monica. We all arrived a different times and from different places, but by lunchtime on the 1st of April we were all reunited!

On 1st April, a trip to the Basilica San Marco and the Doges Palace was the order of thr day.  I can honestly say, it's the first time in my life i've been in a torture chamber on my birthday but hey, life is full of surprises right??

While we were there I fell in love with these beauties!

And this is the Doges Palace - very understated, right?

Well, it came and it went!

It's been a nice break from work and Mr D and I have eaten and drunk far too much.  We've intentially had a fairly quiet one, caught up with a couple of friends, but otherwise kept ourselves to ourselves.  As usual, the highlight of our Christmas break has been Windlesham Pram Race which takes place on Boxing Day (26th December) every year, and it's a day Mr D and I both look forward to.

Windlesham is our neighbouring village and so walking down to the race route and back is about a 3 mile round trip, a nice way of working off a few of the 12 million calories we ate on Christmas day.

The race passes four of Windlesham's five pubs, and teams and spectators are encouraged to stop off and support each establishment, so it's a 'race' in name only, but the main purpose of the event is to raise money for local charities which include upkeep of Windlesham's open spaces such as the recreation ground and field of Remembrance, wildlife rescue and riding for the disabled. There are three winners at the end of the race - the fastest team, the best costumes and the best engineered 'pram'.

Each 'pram' doesn't actually have to be a pram, it can be any kind of wheeled vehicle, but the main rule is that it must only be propelled by being pulled or pushed.  It can't have any kind of self propulsion such as a motor or battery.

And that's where the fun starts... there is no end to the imagination of some folks.

I'm never prouder of my community than I am on this day!

Mr D and I had a week away last week, spoiling ourselves at a posh hotel and celebrating our anniversary.  Although it was generally a relaxing week, one thing we did while we were away was visit the magnificent Ludlow Castle.

The Castle overlooks the lovely medieval town of Ludlow and stands on the border between England and Wales.  It was built originally in the 11th century, and enlarged in the 14th century.  It has a long and vivid history and is linked to such characters as King Richard III, the princes in the Tower and Prince Arthur, Henry VIII's older brother who would have been king instead of Henry had he survived beyond his 15th year.

I may have mentioned in the past that Ludlow was my maiden name, so I'd always wanted to visit my namesake castle (I've been to the Town several times, but never made it to the castle).  My Dad jokes that this is my inheritance - I wish!

Anyhoo, here are a few snaps from our day of exploring my past!

Thirty years ago today, this little shindig took place.

Mr D and I are low key celebrating with a meal at a nice restaurant this evening, then we're heading off for a few days away together in early September.

I'm not entirely sure where that 30 years have gone!  I'm older, heavier, and a bit more cynical.  A lot of water - good and bad - has flowed under the bridge since then, but one thing that hasn't changed it that I'm happy we found each other!

I've just got back from a weekend celebrating the wedding of Sam, jj1564's son, and the beautiful Yuki.

It was such a lovely weekend, happy and emotional at the same time.  June was not forgotten; she was remembered and celebrated all the way through the day. She would have been so proud of the amazing man that Sam has become an the lovely wife he has chosen.

It was also great to catch up with milly_gal as well, it seems to be such a long time since I've seen her.

Here's a few pictures of the day:

I had a birthday today, and as it fortunately fell on the Easter Bank holiday, Mr Dizzo and I were both off work, we decided to make a nice day of it.

We ended up going for a nice long walk in a beautiful part of the country called White Horse Hill.  The weather was kind to us, and it ended up being a beautiful, breezy day!

White Horse Hill is a place steeped in history and legend and I've loved it forever.  I'll post more about it later because I find it fascinating and I think you will too, but for now, here is Mr Dizzo and me, the gruesome twosome!

We finished up the day in a lovely pub called the White Horse (of course) in the nearby village of Uffington and had a delicious meal.

So yes, becoming another year older wasn't so bad after al!

Boxing Day (26th December) is the Day of the Windlesham Pram Race.  And it's a day Mr D and I both look forward to every year.

Windlesham is our neighbouring village and so walking down to the race route and back is about a 3 mile round trip, a nice way of working off a few of the 12 million calories we ate on Christmas day.

The race passes four of Windlesham's five pubs and teams, and spectators are encouraged to stop off and support each establishment, so it's a 'race' in name only, but the main purpose of the event is to raise money for local charities which include upkeep of Windlesham's open spaces such as the recreation ground and field of Remembrance, wildlife rescue and riding for the disabled.

Each 'pram' doesn't actually have to be a pram, it can be any kind of wheeled vehicle, but the main rule is that it must only be propelled by being pulled or pushed.  It can't have any kind of other propulsion such as a motor or pedals.

And that's where the fun starts... there is no end to the imagination of some folks.  It always makes me smile that even though it's December and chilly as hell, there's no shortage of men who can't wait to go running around Windlesham wearing next to nothing.  (It must be the beer-blanket) :D

It's also a strange fact of British life that the men can't wait to dress up as women, whilst at the same time, looking as unfeminine as possible - and this year's event didn't disappoint!  XD

I'm never prouder of my community than I am on this day!

There's always a team that parodies local roadworks

I got back from the hospital this morning, and it's good news!

The operation was a success and that pesky little hole has closed!

I'm now just waiting for the gas bubble to deflate, (the doctor says it it's deflating quite quickly so will probably be gone in 2 - 3 weeks), and then I'll be back to something approaching normal vision again 😁😁

If anyone's interested in what the world looks like when you have a vitrectomy gas bubble, this is a fair approximation. (The lower bubble area is a little darker and more domed than what is shown here), but now that the bubble is shrinking, this is roughly what the vision in my right eye is like!

Because looking through the gas bubble is like looking through water, that part of my field of vision is blurry and refracted like everything is bigger or further away, and I've walked into doorframes a couple of times! It wouuld be just my luck to end up back in the hospital with a broken toe!!!

This JIBcon was shaping up to be very different to those gone before, mainly because of Misha's absence, but in the interests of turning a negative into a positive, we thought, 'well that's going to shake up the dynamic a bit', and it really did.  The final panel, which would ordinarily be Jensen and Misha was Jensen and Richard with a little Jared and Rob thrown in.  And it was pure, pure anarchy.  Laugh out loud ridiculousness from beginning to end!  If you get the chance to watch it on Youtube, do - it was fabulous madness!

The addition of Jojo and Drake from the Winchesters was another plus - they're quickly establishing themselves as convention darlings.  But as always, the main draw was each other.

Along with amberdreamsheavenli24stellamiradean_hugs_sammy, and our other non-LJ friends, Wendy, Natalie, Chris, Monica and many others, this was a classic weekend.

There have been three JIBs in quick succession thanks to the catch up from Covid, so it could be reasonable to assume the energy and enthusiasm is starting to wane.  However, at this JIBcon, it seemed the exact opposit was true.  The positive energy of this weekend was palpable, and when JIBcon 2024 was announced, there was a stampede to pre-register.

As always, Jensen and Jared were adorable, and gave so generously of themselves for everyone at the convention, and from my own personal point of view, I had a couple of lovely one-on-one exchanges with Jensen that made my little fangirl heart flutter!

When I approached Jensen for my fourth photo with him, he grinned and winked at me, and I just laughed and said, "yep, me again - the bad penny!"
Jensen put his arm around me and said, "oh no, a good penny.  A shiny penny!"  Yes, OK, I kind of evaporated on the spot, so sue me!

At the Monday concert, it was a great event at a fab venue, and right at the end, Jensen et al, sang Hallelujah (the Leonard Cohen song).  The Monday is always an emotional night anyway because it's the last night before we all go our separate ways, but with that song being sung - by Jensen no less, at the end of it, eveyone sitting at our table - me included - was in floods!

After I had composed myself, I went to say thanks to Daniela, the organiser, and I stepped back from giving her a hug, Jensen walked right toward me.  He grinned again, and I blurted out 'that was fabulous - you made me cry!"  To my utter shock, he came over and took me by both hands and thanked me for coming!

Yep, and I evaporated again.  I seem to have spent a lot of this weekend in a gaseous state.  Or maybe just in a state!

So in summary, it was another fabulous JIBcon.  Rome was gorgeous, Jared and Jensen were gorgeous, all my JIBcon lovelies were gorgeous...

I can't wait to do it again next year!

Finally, I have my laptop back  \0/  It's great to have a keyboard and a decent sized screen again!!

There's been lots going on since I was last here, so I'll post some updates over the coming days, but for now, just because I want to post something scrummy at my journal to celebrate, here's something to honour of our lovely Sam Winchester's birthday earlier this week. :)

I'm having a birthday tomorrow, and one of my lovely work colleagues bought me this:

She knows me so well!
I can't guarantee it smells exactly like him, but until I get the chance again to manhandle our lovely boy (and maybe have a good sniff), this is a great substitute!!

We're heading toward Christmas again, and I've already started giving some thought to my Christmas break.

It''s my personal tradition to take on a craft project over the Christmas break, and last year I did my first cross stitch (OK, it did take me until April to fiinish it), but I did really enjoy it.  It was a fun devation from art.

So, I've decide to start early this year.  I've decided to do another, more ambitious cross stitch, and this one is for me to frame and hang on my bedroom wall which was redecroated to duck egg blue earlier this year.

I started about three weeks ago,  so heaven knows how long this is going to take me, but it'll certainlly keep me occupied!!

As you can see, I've made a solid start...

And believe me, sewing on a black background with black thread under domestic light is a BASTARD!!!

So, yesterday morning, train strikes notwithstanding, I headed off to Olympia in London for London Film and Comic Con.  I had one specific purpose for going, and this was the it:

I do have a soft spot for the wonderful Mister Tennant and I'm thrilled to say he was every bit as delightful as people say he is!

So, it's that time of year again and Mr D and I have been busy decorating the house to welcome trick or treaters!

Although now, right on cue, it's absolutely heaving down with rain, so I don't know how many we're going to get :P

But anyway it's been fun, and I hope you all have a safe and happy Hallowe'en of your own :D

Pictures! )

We have a couple of episodes of supernatural lined up for Hallowe'en viewing shortly (Monster Movie, anyone) and some delicious nibbles lined up, together with a glass of something nice (our own Hallowe'en candy)  ;)

And of course, my two small furry people add their best wishes too!

Hey gang!

Rumours of my demise are greatly exaggerated.  I have, in fact, been having a ball at my last con of 2022 in Paris.

I'm going to London Film and Comic Con Winter Edition in November, and I'm going to meet ... DAVID TENNANT!!!!!

Now that's one serious tick on the bucket list ...

I'm just checking in after a week's absence to let you know that any rumours of my demise are greatly exaggerated.  I'm still alive and kicking and here in beautiful Roma ruminating on the end of another wonderful JIBcon.

Full write-up and pics to come, but I can say here and now that it's been an amazing rollercoaster of emotions - nearly all good, mostly revolving around catching up with friends old and new ... the new including the wonderful tifaching who was one of the first people to welcome me to Livejournal back in 2010/2011, and as such is one of my longest-standing buddies in fandom, so to actually get to hug this gorgeous lady for the very first time was magical!

And there was Jensen.  LOTS of Jensen...

So just to prolong the JIB mood, here's a (rather poor quality) sneaky peek at a couple of my photo ops!  :)

I travelled up to London yesterday to catch up with my lovely friend cuddyclothes who is in the UK at the moment.  It was great to see her and we chatted non-stop all evening.  We enjoyed a decent cheeseburger in a restaurant along the south bank, although it took us a while to get served and we thought we'd been placed in timeout because we'd inadvertantly been naughty and tried to seat ourselves!

As cuddyclothes has been such a loyal supporter of the mini-community over at spn_on_parade, a couple of little friends decided to join us!

Apologies for my 'radio silence' for a few days.  I've been over on the Isle of Wight, visiting my parents, and also participating in Open Studios.

I don't know if Open Studios is something that has travelled outside the shores of the UK, but if not, it's an event that takes place every year where people can visit artists at work in their studios and check out their work and maybe even buy some!

I've never taken part in Open Studios before because my house in Surrey is not set up to have strangers coming in off the street to look at my studio and my work (mainly because it's all upstairs) and because my parents' house in the Isle of Wight is — well, it's my parents' house — and I can't expect them to play host to a bunch of strangers!

However, now that dapplegrey art has a permanent home in the Imaginarium in West Wight, I have a base for Open Studios!

So, I have been spending three days being one of seven artists in situ at the Imaginarium, doing some arting, doing a bit of 'workshoppy' stuff, and generally just having three wonderful days just talking non-stop about art.  I even sold a couple of prints!

Here I am on the first day just doing my stuff!

And the finished product!
