Date: 2019-09-04 07:06 am (UTC)I had got my English O level when I was fourteen so I had that plus a typing qualification to my name, so I guessed I'd have a bit of a headstart on other school leavers like me who were waiting for their O level results. I left school on 21st June 1984 and started my first job about a month later. After a while, I started day release college. In the next three or four years I went on to get two A levels, one at night school and then the second through distance learning.

Date: 2019-09-03 11:12 pm (UTC)We had a teacher or two from Australia who told us they start school one year earlier〜at five years old〜so they graduate at 17. Even then, depending on the individual, they didn't quite seem ready to be out in the world. I would not have been at that age, that is for sure.

Date: 2019-09-04 07:12 am (UTC)Schools here in the UK, now have to go on until 18, but back when I left school (1984) you could leave school legally at 16. Most kids stayed on until they'd completed their O Levels (final compulsory education exams) and then finished, and either left school or went on to further education.
I finished my maths O level at 12.30 pm on the 2st June 1984 and was gone by 1pm!!
