When you live in a household that loves Sci-Fi and rabbits, and you can't make up your mind what new pictures to get to hang over the hutch...

I would have loved to get Juniper as Uhura but the options for female pets were a bit limited, so she became an awesome stormtrooper instead!

It's such a tough life :)

My beautiful girl Juniper has been a very poorly girl this last few days with a gut obstruction/gut stasis.

She spent Monday night in our local veterinary hospital for overnight monitoring, and we were genuinely afraid we might lose her that night. There was talk of surgery on Tuesday if she didn't improve but luckily she did. The following morning when I spoke to the vet, they told me Juju had nibbled through her drip line, and I thought 'that's my girl!'

We think (hope) we may have turned a corner yesterday as she has been eating well and is pooping more, although not quite as much as I would like yet. She even had a little run around in the garden today, but we're keeping a close eye on her and still medicating her - four medicines given orally by syringe four times a day!  Tomorrow is her last day and I'm very glad of that. She's a little cow for taking meds and medicating her is stressful for everyone involved!

Nutmeg has been a wonderful brother and he kept Juju company through the night she was in hospital. Having him there would have helped manage her stress levels and may well have been the difference between her making it through the night or not.

I'm cautiously optimistic that she's over the worst. and is going back for a vet check up on Saturday morning, but I won't be taking my eyes off of her for a good few weeks!

It may be Independence Day across the pond but here in our household it's Happy Gotcha Day!

Yes, it's exactly two years since these little herberts entered our lives, and what a wild ride we've had ever since. Our bubs bring us love, attitude, destruction, entertainment,, a little bit of worry, and so much joy and laughter!

Ever since we've had the bunnies, there's always been a question mark hanging over why Nutmeg looks so different to Juniper, his sister.  And why he doesn't look anything like either of the breeds of rabbit he's descended from.  It doesn't make us love him any less, in fact it makes us love him more - he's sort of like our cute little throwback puzzle!

When we took babies, Nutmeg and Juniper in from the bunny rescue shelter, we were told their lineage was Dutch x Rex and that they were sibling litter mates.  We knew that to be the case because we saw a video of them at four weeks old in their litter with their two other siblings.

Now, we can totally see how

could create this:

But where the heck did our little conehead with his lop ears come from???

We have an 'in' joke that he's the milkman's.

Well, you know how there's usually a kernel of truth in most humour?

The bubs went to the vets for their annual check up and vaccinations last week, and we were discussing the conundrum of Nutmeg's ears. Our bunny specialist vet told me that, under appropriate circumstances, it is quite possible for a doe to produce one litter of babies from two, or even more, different bucks.  It's a phenomenon called superfecundity.

So... we have no proof that that's the answer to our puzzle but, really, I love the thought of this! It does seem that our joke that Nutmeg is the milkman's isn't quite as outlandish as it seems!!   XD

Bunnies!

It's been a little while since I posted any bunny pics, so here's a happy, naughty bunspam for you all!

It's that time of year again, so it would be rude not to post some long-eared lovely...

While I was away celebrating mine and my Mum's birthday, these two were boarding at the five-star Hug a Bunny Hotel, living the life of Riley!

These photos were taken by Karen, owner and Manager of the Hug a Bunny Hotel!

I'm ready for my close up...

Here be bunnies )

We heard from the Vet a couple of days ago, and Juniper's mysterious little lump as just an abscess.  So she's in the clear!  :D

dizzojay: (Default)
It's been almost a week since Juju' s operation, and without wishing to tempt fate, she's doing great!  She's pretty much back to normal, and hopefully it stays that way from now on!  We're expecting the histology results on the lump tomorrow, so I'll be glad to get that out of the way!  Then we've just got to hope the insurance pays up - Juju's ordeal has left me nearly £600 out of pocket!

Anyhow, that's as maybe - she's worth every penny!

Here she is standing guard over her favourite thing (beside Nutmeg), it looks like their birthday gift was a big hit...

And here's her poor little ear where the vet had put the cannula.  Bunny ears are so delicate and fine, it was horrible to think of a big needle in there - the bruising has gone down quite a bit, thankfully!

Beautiful Juju girl had a little operation yesterday to remove a lump from her tummy that we found at a vets check up a couple of weeks ago. Lump has gone off for lab tests to check it's nothing nasty, but vet's first instinct based on what she saw is that it's an abscess. Juju is back home, tired and a bit shell shocked, and hating my guts right now!

I've been prostituting myself with parsley all day to tempt her appetite and get her to like me again (might be a long job).  I had to take her back to the vets tonight for a post-op check up which has set her back a little bit, but on the whole she seems fine.

My gorgeous, brave girl - keeping everything crossed for her that it was 'just' an abscess! ❤️

Poor little Nutmeg is a bit confused as to why his sister is sleepy and grumpy, but he's being a good boy and taking good care of her!

I can't believe these two little ratbags are two today. They've graced our lives since they were 16 weeks old, and we have so much love for these stroppy, greedy, adorable little goblins ❤️❤️

Happy birthday Bubbas, now please stop eating the couch!

My work headphones are no more.  They have ceased to be.  They've expired and gone to meet their maker.
They have met with an unfortunate end at the hands teeth of their nemesis.
Honestly, this carnage took about 4.5 seconds.  Those two are like deadly little nibble ninjas!

And now I've got to explain this away to our IT guys so I can get another pair ... *sigh*

With the snowflake Challenge and all, it's been a little while since those buns made an appearance here at my journal.

So here's a trio of recent videos of them doing what they do best: eating!

Well, it's been a funny old few weeks.  Although the start of this year hasn't been anywhere near as horrible as the start of 2022 thankfully, it hasn't exactly covered itself with glory, but anyhow - there has been good with the not so good!

Juniper's new years resolution is to find her left ear...

They look like they've formed their own eighties bunband and this is their first album cover.

Nutmeg on Keyboards and Juniper on vocals... Tears for Ears?

December 17 → something that made you happy this year

Lots of things made me happy this year:

My Dad recovering from his health issues, having a birthday that wasn't in lockddown, getting back to going to conventions and catching up with my lovely friends again - especially those from overseas who I hadn't seen since 2019, seeing Jared and Jensen's post-Supernatural projects going from strength to strength, and bringing them both to entirely new and appreciative audiences... just those things for starters.

But there has been one constant this year.  One thing (well, two things actually) that have brought us nothing but joy and entertainment all year.

Juniper and Nutmeg, our bunnies. )

Juniper was a poorly girl on Wednesday evening.

From the signs she was giving off, I guessed it was the onset of GI stasis, which is a gut blockage or immobility.  It's a fairly common problem in rabbits which can often be caused by gas or furballs but it can become very lethal very quickly.

I managed to secure an emergency vet appointment, but my car is currently off the road with a gearbox problem and Mr D hadn't got home from work yet, so I had to call upon the help of my lovely neighbour and bunny auntie, Becky,
who stepped up to the plate and very kindly drove us through the rush hour to the vet.

Happy to say that thanks to rapid intervention and Becky's invaluable help, my adorable little moo-bag appears to be fully recovered and is back on form and eating for England!

My buns' favourite toy by a mile is their stacking cups.  Now these things are actually designed for infant humans, but if you check out the reviews for them on Amazon, over half of them are from bunny owners!!!  XD

We hide treats in their cups and challenge them to forage for it, and they LOVE doing it!

Here are a few videos of my buns' fun wth their cups - I hope you get they joy from them  that I do!
