Hello f/listies!

We’ve all seen the terrible events going on in Australia at the moment, and the devastating effects on the wildlife in those regions.

Lots of people have been helping with the wildlife relief efforts by crocheting birds nests, and sewing bat wraps and joey pouches.

Now, unfortunately, I’ve never picked up a crochet needle in my entire life, and I don’t own a sewing machine, nor would I have a clue how to use one,  so the time it would take me to produce any of these things to a decent standard would make any attempt pointless.

But what I can do is draw.

So, I have produced a piece of artwork and I am offering it for sale in aid of Wildlife Victoria’s Bushfire Appeal. (A receipt for the donation will be provided)
https://www.wildlifevictoria.org.au/…

The picture is called ‘Mother’ and she is on sale to the highest bidder. (Please note this is just a cameraphone photo under domestic light, so not the best reproduction. She was only finished this afternoon and I haven’t had a chance to make a professional scan yet. I’ll post an updated picture when I’ve had a chance to so this, hopefully next week).

She is 16” x 12” and drawn in pastel, same as my usual work. I would usually charge £110 (unframed) for a picture of this size, and so I’m asking a minimum price of £50.

If you’re interested, please PM me at my dapplegrey art Facebook page with your offer before Sunday 26th January, and – as I stated previously – I will sell to the highest bid. I promise that every penny paid for the art will go to helping Australian wildlife.

I’ll discuss specific details eg: postage/framing etc with the winning bidder.

If you’ve got any questions, get in touch either by PM or as a comment to this post.

Thank you for reading! Over and out !!😊

December 09 → talk about art this year

As my time was fairly occupied with study in the early part of the year, I did think tha my arting time may have been limited.  And for  couple of months it was.  But, in hingsight, over the course of year I have managed to do a good amount and a good variety of art in the end!

So, it's been fun going through my collection for this year - and here's a little random cross-section of my art this year!

Storm is all done.  I've just got approval from the owner so she'll be off to her new home next weekend!

The first commission from my Summer art shows is complete.  Just needs fixing and framing before she goes to her lovely new home at the end of October.

This is Ruby!

So, the summer season of art shows has ended, and all in all, it's been a great - if tiring - season.

Three shows, six days trading.  The first and last show were brilliant, the middle one, was a little bit subdued, but overall it's been a very worthwhile summer.

It's always nice to catch up with old faces - many of whom I only see during this month - some are traders, and others are regular visitors and customers.  And whether that customer buys a keyring or a £150 original, it's always great to see them back at the stall eager to see what's new!

So it's not quite all over for 2019 as I did come away from the last show with two commissions, but for now, I'm taking a couple of weeks away from art stuff, just to clear my head and get my 'mojo' buzzing again!

So, in the meantime, here's a few pictures of a summer on the road with dapplegrey art ...

I mentioned a few days ago that I was working on a commission and I just wasn't feeling it.

I don't know exactly why that was, but I suspect it was a combination of factors; I'm very busy in my day job at the moment and working long hours so the creative muse is a bit weary, the picture is for Barry's Mum's neighbour, and I don't really like getting involved in anything that she organises, and the photo wasn't very good but when I questioned it, the owner was happy for me to use it.

But anyway, the picture is finished.  Two miniature Yorkies - Toby and Honey, and yes, Toby really does look that angry in his photo (which is why I questioned it!!!)

I'm just checking in after a busy weekend, while I'm having a bit of downtime on the ferry home!

It's been busy, but in the best kind of way.  My dapplegrey art show has been wonderful this weekend - today has been storming; I've barely sat down and - to be honest - am completely knackered, but the dapplegrey art coffers are well and truly replenished!

Best of all, this little dude headed off to a wonderful new home today...

As a nice diversion, my Mum's younger sister and niece came over for the weekend, and we were able to catch up for a family meal on Saturday night at a nice Pub in Newport called the Bargeman's Rest (one of my favourites, and my recommendation!)

So yes, all-in-all a nice weekend, to round off a wonderful GISH week!

I worked the Lightwater Village Fete today, and it was dappegrey art's first show of the year.

I almost didn't do it; it's an outdoor show, and the weather forecast was very unsettled  Even though I have a gazebo, it's only showerproof and my stock is so vulnerable to moisture and wind, that I'm always very cautious, and considered crying off a couple of times this morning.

But eventually, although it was cloudy, this morning looked fairly dry so I decided to chance it and go ahead and set up.  Luckily, I made the correct judgment call this time, because although I thought I would be dodging showers on and off all day, I eventually dodged one shower, and spent the rest of the day standing in blistering, unbroken sunshine and now I look like I've been sunbathing under the hole in the ozone layer!!

All in all, it was a very positive start to dapplegrey art's year, and a highlight of the day was seeing these two beauties.

They're Suffolk Punches and Suffolks are one of the rarest heavy horse breeds in the world.  There are only about 300 in the whole of the UK, but the awesome news is that because of dedicated protection and breeding plans, their numbers are gradually rising - long may it continue!

There is an art and photography competition being run by my local wildlife charity, Surrey Wildlife Trust, and so I decided to enter.

Entries have to reflect wildlife that is found in Surrey, and one of the most iconic animals in my part of the world is the Red Fox.  These guys raid our bins and keep us awake at night with their foxy love-shenanigans.

So, for to that beautiful, wily, opportunitistic, long-nosed, big-brained beastie that frequents my neighbourhood, here is my tribute:

So, I've just finished a piece of artwork for dapplegrey art, and this is it!

Mt Dizzo and I have been discussing names, and so far we have 'Semaphore', 'Left Hand Down a Bit', Carrots at Three O'Clock', and 'He Went That'a'Way'.

Any thoughts?

I've had a few months' nice refreshing break from arting, and given myself the opportunity to get my ideas and enthusiasm back.

So, once or twice, at various art shows, I've been asked about red pandas, and I never had one on the stall ...

Until now. )

I've just finished my last commission of 2018, and the first picture I've drawn for two months after my self-enforced art break.  The picture has been approved and now it just needs signing and fixing ready for framing.

This is Millie and Tigger, and they will be going to their new home at the end of this week!  :)

December 9th - Talk about art this year

Oh, now art is something I CAN talk about!

I've done a phenomenal amount of art this year.  I've done about seven pictures for dapplegrey art (random pictures and commissions), which is actually a little down on usual years, but three of the four commissions I've done have been big, multiple-subject ones, so that kind of makes it much more sustainable.

I've also done about twenty - TWENTY!!! - character portraits of various kinds.  About nine Supernatural portraits and one Spartacus portrait that I took to the summer conventions, five that I took to Germany with me as gifts; a Jensen, a Crowley, a Doctor Who, a Frodo and a Rainbow Dash (for a very special young lady!) and finally five Spartacus portraits which I took to the Spartacus convention in October.

I actually did so much artwork, and in a lot of cases, I was putting myself under a lot of time pressure to get it done, I've found that by the time I got back from Paris in early October, I was all 'arted out'.  I just seriously needed a break.  And so, until this last week,  haven't picked up a pencil for almost two months.

I've just started a new commission which I hope to have finished shortly before Christmas, and this is my progress so far:

Now that I'm rested, I feel that I'm getting my 'mojo' back, so I'm looking forward to arting again in the new year.  But until then, here is a little cross-section of some of the art I've done this year:

Hey!
I'm back frrom a VERY sunny Isle of Wight (red nose ahoy!) and finally looking back on another dapplegrey art summer.
I always love the Wolverton Manor Garden Festival, it's set in the grounds of a beautiful late 15th century manor house which has a moat that children can kayak on.

The festival has displays of Tudor and Stewart dancing and so there are lots of beautifully costumed re-enactors walking around, and the whole day just has a nice rural, quinetesssentially English feel about it.

From a completely selfish point of view, I also like the show because it's where I get my biggest pitch, and so I can really make the stall look impressive with lots of stuff on display:

All in all, it was a lovely weekend.  It was nice to be back and Wolverton, and lovely to see my parents again.  But the dapplegrey summer is over, and now it's on to my Germany adventure with [livejournal.com profile] herminekurotowa, [livejournal.com profile] sinfulslasher and [livejournal.com profile] meazrael_64.  I'm sad that [livejournal.com profile] julchen11 won't be able to join me, but circumstances are what they are, and hopefully we cn make up for it some other time :)

I'm taking a few minutes time out while I do my washing, then packing starts in earnest!

My to-do list is getting longer not shorter, so I neeed to get my arse off the couch and into the shower.  NOW!

Catch up soon xx
dizzojay: (dapplegrey)
I had another art show today, which unfortunately proved to be a bit of a washout.  It was a new event, and right from the outset, it was under-attended, and then after a couple of hours, the drizzle closed in, and the few people there were disappeared.  So, I decided to cut my losses and pack up.  It's a shame, but it's the only way I find out whether a show is any good for me to do or not, so there's no point in getting despondent about it.  I tried it, it didn't work out.  Won't do it again.

However, in the two hours I  was up and trading, I did have one exchange which made me smile/sigh/groan/wonder about the human race generally ...

Lady comes by the stall and scrutinises the pictures.  After a minute of squinting at them, she turns to me...

Lady: They're very nice, fascinating technique - are they photos?
Me: *thinks* There's three unicorns and a Pegasus on the front row ... is sarcasm a viable option here?
Me: No, madam, they're not.

Welcome to the wonderful world of retail!

I think it's 72 … I could be wrong.  To be fair, I barely know what day of the week it is at the moment.

So this week has seen me running around like a blue arsed fly again.  After getting back from the Isle of Wight late on Sunday, I spent Monday and Tuesday evenings after work running off and mounting more dapplegrey prints and other items to replace the ones that were sold last weekend.

Yesterday, after work, I jumped on what was possibly the slowest train in the history of the world, and headed off to London to meet the lovely [livejournal.com profile] herminekurotowa for coffee and chats.  Unfortunately, as I came straight from the office, she had the rare 'privilege' of seeing me all booted and suited - a scary sight indeed for those who think I exist only in jeans and Supernatural T shirts!

Today, I left work early for a physiotherapy appointment which went relatively well; progress is steady rather than spectacular, but as I can now lift my arm beyond 90 degrees without support, I'm taking that as a win.  That was followed by a quick change and then a movie night with my mate Dave (who is still visibly shrinking every time he mentions my shoulder) to go to see Mamma Mia 2.

Tomorrow after work, I head down to the Island for the second dapplegrey art show of the summer - this time, a one day show on Saturday.  It's an outdoor show, so I'm crossing everything that can physically be crossed for dry weather!

And, as well as all this, in between times, I did manage to write one little drabble for the Fanfiction.net drabble challenge; this week's challenge word was 'lick'.

And here it is ...

THAT EXTRA INGREDIENT )

And finally, I'm just going to leave this here for you all to make up for the fact that sightings of me around here have been rarer than rocking horse crap this week.

Stop the world, I want to get off ...

So, with my apologies and compliments, have some fanfiction green eyes, courtesy of the lovely Monica D! )

I'm back - albeit breifly, from a wonderful weekend on the Isle of Wight at dapplegrey art's first show of the season, and I'm thrilled to say, in terms of sales, it was the best ever.

I caught up with friends I've made on the craft fayre circuit - honestly, it's like a big reunion every year.  These are brilliant events just for the social aspect as well as the financial aspect!

How is it the 31st of July?

Of course, the fact that it's almost August can only mean one thing - it's almost dapplegrey art season!

I have four shows over five weekends in August, all on the Isle of Wight, and thankfully, my lovely Dad has stepped up to the plate to help me because I still have limited movement in my left arm, and setting up and breaking down the stall is seriously physical stuff.

Of course, my Dad is 74 and has two gammy knees, so between the two of us, we will have one full set of functioning limbs!!

Anyway, it will be lovely to catch up with all my dapplegrey art regulars and friends, and hopefully make a few new friends and a few good sales along the way!!

Over the last few days, I've been wanting to do one last picture for my dapplegrey art portfolio for the summer season.  I wasn't 100% sure what I wanted to do, but I knew I wanted to have some fun with the eyes.  I love drawing eyes, and so animals with big, expressive eyes are my favourite subject.

I've been over on the Isle of Wight today, mainly to see my Dad for his birthday, but also to deliver my latest commission to its new owner (and get paid for it!!)

The portrait of Major was the second doggy portait I've done for this particular lady, the first being of her Golden Lab, Harry, and I'm delighted to say she was very happy with it.

In fact, when we were on our way home, I got sent the following picture - maybe a couple more satisfied customers?
