Snowflake Challenge - Day 6
Jan. 11th, 2021 06:59 pmThis is a double rec for Fic and art:
The Cost of Falling
A truly wonderful Destiel story by Jinxedambitions set in a travelling circus in the fifties. Castiel is a mysterious and exotic foreign aerialist brought in to rescue a failing circus. Dean is a rough and tough no-nonsense roustabout.
The story is skillfully written, and the writer either knows a great deal about aerial gymnastics or has done some great research.
It's also beautifully atmospheric, and the bleakness and drabness of the era contrasts perfectly with the swirling colour and excitement of the circus scenes.
Lots of familiar characters turn up – Gabriel is a clown with a distinctly sinister undertone, Benny is a delightful strongman, and Charlie is an impish firedancer who is training Sam to perform, against his brother’s judgement!
This is a long story, but it grips me from beginning to end. It’s one of those slow-burn tales that I love so much and 85,000 words disappears before I know it!
The story is further enhanced by some truly stunning artwork by Rhapsodean.
The art is stylised perfectly to suit the subject matter and the era, and is as delicate and beautiful as the colourful silks that are the backdrop of the story.
This story and this art enchants me every time I revisit it!
Dead Guy Robe Dean
I treated myself to this cute little dude a few months ago. He's a custom Funko from a very talented lady on Etsy called Mistyfigs, and I think he's adorable!

Date: 2021-01-12 12:30 am (UTC)your fic rec kinda turned my head because one year for bigbang i wrote a circus au (rps, tho, and set in 1937) in which misha and jensen are both aerialists and jared's a roustabout. i also made richard speight, jr, a clown, but because he's not named in the fic no one knows that but me. obviously i have no idea where or how jinxedambitions got the plot bunny, and i'm certainly not going to accuse them of plagiarism - i mean, it's not like i'm the first person to write a circus au - but man, it's so weird to read a summary for someone else's fic that's so close to something of yours, except... not. kinda weird, kinda cool.
