I'm not someone that can just schlep off to the gym and work out for the sake of schlepping off to the gym and working out.  When it comes to exercise generally, I have the boredom threshold of a two-year old, and so I have to have a target; something to keep me engaged.

A couple of years back, I did a two of charity runs.  I'm not a runner, but they did focus my mind just enough to keep me running (or at least attempting to) until after the runs were complete.  But once the runs were over, that was it for me.  Running wasn't something that I enjoyed in any way, so - no more.

Then I found some online distance missions which could be completed by any form of exercise, so I decided to give one a go, and completed the distance of Hadrian's wall (90 miles) throughout the month of December 2019.  It was great because I could track my route through their app and follow myself on Google Maps.

I finished that shortly before Christmas, and immediately signed up for the next challenge, which was a bit of a step up:

Lands End to John O'Groats.

The traditional route for LE to JOG is 837 miles, but that follows lots of A-roads and Motorways, so is extremely boring.  However, the online challenge route was designed to take you past lots of places of interest and areas of natural beauty, and so was 1,083 miles overall.  Much more fun to follow on Google Maps!

I started it on 1st January and gave myself 6 months to complete it by walking and cycling, that worked out at a spit under 6 miles a day.  My finish date was the 30th June.

I actually finished it on the 14th June.

And today I got my gorgeous medal  :D

So yes, just a little bit pleased with myself!

You're entitled to be proud, that's a great achievement! And that medal is huge! I was expecting a pin badge size until I scrolled down to the pic of you wearing it. Still that's more fitting, given the distance involved!

That's a nice medal! And a wonderful accomplishment. So...you're one of those people who need something to run...from? Or is that just me?

Thank you. Nope, it's definitely not just you. Now that I've technically 'given up' running - not that I was ever a runner to begin with - I've always said if you see me running, look behind me for a monster or in front of me for a bus because that's the only time you'll see me doing it!

Wohoo! Congratulations! I'm like that too. I like running/walking only if I have a specific reason. So what's your next challenge? :D

I'm totally with you. That's partly why I got my bike out during lockdown - I was SO sick of walking everywhere!
They have a length of the grand canyon challenge which I fancy doing next. I think that one's about 180 miles long.

YAY! WELL DONE! Totally you should be proud of yourself.

I'm very interested in this app and how it works since I also have a (very, very) low boredom threshold when it comes to exercise but it's possible something like this might motivate me. How does it work? And do you have to jog or cycle, or could you just kind of . . . amble? Do you think the app would be available to me in Oz?

I've logged 5 miles so far. I'm past the airport and onto the cycle track. I'm loving it! It's such a motivator to be able to visualize a sense of progress. Looking forward to getting down to Lake Pukaki, but I have a ways to go :)
