I wasn't around last night because Mr D and I were at the local cinema watching Bohemian Rhapsody.

Most of you know that I'm a HUGE Queen fan, and Freddie Mercury has been a hero of mine ever since my teenage years, so I've been counting down the days to see this film ever snce it was first announced - and I wasn't disappointed!

Rami Malik's portrayal of Freddie was beautiful - spot-on and sympathetic.  If that man doesn't win an Oscar for this, then there's no justice in this world.

But taking nothing away, the other members of Queen were potrayed brilliantly; Roger, the 'other' Diva; Brian, the coolly intellectual brains of the group; and John, the quiet man, the peacemaker and voice of reason.  I couldn't fault any of the four main actors, they brought their characters to life amazingly well.

And the music ... well, that speaks for itself.

Of course, I was bawling when I left the cinema.  Funnily enough, it was when Freddie played the opening bars to 'We are the Champions' at Live Aid that started me off.  But it was good bawling; it came from a place of love!!

So, yes ... a great movie, a great, nostaligic evening, and fantastic music.  And a reminder of how much I miss Freddie.

I've heard from other sources, as well, as to how wonderful this movie is. I haven't had a chance to get to the theatres yet, but I will soon. My brother, who I spoke to at length about the movie, told me I should watch the LiveAid video of their performance before going to movie, cuz he says that they mimicked that performance to a T as far as mannerisms and what not. I guess they skipped one or two songs, but he said the movie version of the LiveAid performance was phenomenal. I hoping if not this weekend then next weekend I can get to it. I loved Queen. My senior year in HS, one of my friends was absolutely gaga over Freddie. I mean, over the top, fanatical about him. I liked Freddie, LOVE his voice, but it was interesting to watch her. I'm looking forward to seeing this movie.

I hope you've got the chance to see the film by now. I agree with your brother, the way they depicted the Live Aid performance was spectacular, it was absolutely spot on.

I've always loved Queen, and always especially had an admiration for Freddie. He a born performer, but he had to overcome so many disadvantages to be taken seriously. He was a refugee, living in times where people were a lot less enlightened about that sort of thing. He was a gay man at a time and from a culture where that sort of thing could have got him arrested or beaten up, or even killed. But he never once tried to be anything except himself.

Such a great man, he was such a loss to us.

Oh hey, amazing co-incidence...I went to watch this movie last night too! I teared up at the same point you did (while smiling too!) My twenty-something kids also cried, as did the man sitting next to me--big, tattooed bloke, probably in his earlier thirties! :D That's the power of Freddie Mercury and Queen; as he said himself, Queen wrote and played for the outcasts in the back row who'd always felt different. Typical that the movie's been critically slammed, but the fans love it...much like the band itself. :)

LOVED that movie!! OMG! Everyone was not only awesome, but they looked like they cloned the band! ;P I can't wait for it to come out on DVD so I can add it to my collection!! :D It made me fall in love with Queen all over again!! I really really hope Rami Malik gets an Oscar for it, as well as few other Oscars for the movie in general! It was just AWESOME!! *wants to go see it again*

I agree that Rami deserves an Oscar. All the actors in the band was great, but he was sensational.
I'd love to see it again!

I am so pleased you enjoyed it, as I know you're a huge Queen fan, and it's good to know that you found Rami Malek's portrayal of Freddie beautiful, sympathetic and spot-on. I haven't seen it yet but hope to soon. I'm not surprised you were in tears at the end - it's so sad he's not with us anymore, but it's also wonderful to have his music and this great tribute to him. *hugs*

I honestly cannot fault the film. I'm sure it embellished a few facts, films always do, but I think it was a very sensitively made film. It showed Freddie as a less-than-perfect being, but it did so sympathetically and if anything, it only made him seem flawed and vulnerable - just like all of us, which made him very, very relatable.
