Day 11 - A song that you never get tired of

This one.  Terry Jacks, Seasons in the Sun from 1974 (not that pathetic apology of a remake that Westlife did years later).  I first heard this song as a child and have been fascinated by it ever since.  It's so haunting and melancholy, yet is full of such beautiful images and memories.  I've never fully understood the story behind it, but I've always felt that it was the words of someone young facing death, maybe a soldier going off to war, or a man facing execution. Whatever it is, it's captivatiing, and I'll never get tired of it.

What’s been your favorite season?

Probably seasons 2 - 4

Who is your favorite angel?

Castiel

Who’s your favorite demon?

Got to be Crowley

Who’s your favorite evil character?

Crowley again!

Oh yes, I love that song too, it's so sad and melancholy, and he has a wonderful voice.

I do love that song. I remember listening to it on the radio back in the day. It was a big Top 40 hit. At the time, just a teen, it was just a good song with nice lyrics, now all these years later, as an adult, it has so much more meaning to it. As you, I also wondered what the meaning behind the song is, so I looked it up on the internet.

Apparently, this was first a French song created in 1961, then in 1973 Jacks translated it and changed up the tune a little. Basically, the song's lyrics are a will. The singer is lead person. The girl is his wife, and the man is his best friend. Along the years, his best friend had an affair with his wife, discovered them and killed them. He turned himself in and was sentenced to death. The lyrics are his will; his way to say goodbye to his father, daughter and yes, his wife and the man who he still thinks of his best friend. The song has a whole new meaning with the thought of that story, doesn't it.

I've googled it as well, and I've seen all sorts of different interpretations to it. I've seen the one you mention, something about it being a man dying of illness and I've also seen something about it being a young soldier in Vietnam too.

Whatever the true meaning, it really is a beautiful, heartbreaking song.
