Day 10: a song that makes you sad

This isn't a song as such, as a piece of music.  It's called Concierto de Aranjuez (colloquially known as 'Orange Juice' to us Brits who struggle wiith the spanish pronunciation!)

It's beautiful, and although it's traditionallly a guitar piece, I mostly associate it with this brass version from the British Movie ;'Brassed Off' which is a film set in the mid-eighties, against a backdrop of the long and bitter miners' strike.  It's about a colliery brass band trying to bring a little light into a very dark time.  It's one of those bittersweet black comedies that we do so well here in the UK, and I'd heartily recommend it.

In the last few years of hiis life, it became my Grandad's favourite film.  As his health declined and he became increasingly housebound he would sometimes watch it twice, or even more, in one day.  He wore through at least two VHS copies of the film that I know of!  I'm not sure what the specific appeal of the film was, but I suspect Tara Fitzgerald's character, Gloria was one thing he enjoyed - for one thing, she was pretty, and for another, he'd always been fond of talented, independent women who broke the mould.  I think also the music was a large part of his love for the film, brass band music had always been a favourite of his.  This piece was his favourite in the whole film, and he would often just play it on loop over and over again.

We played this particular version at his funeral, and although I love the piece, a) because it is a gorgeous and uplifting tune, and b) because I know it bought him a lot of pleasure, I will never again be able to listen to it without being in floods of tears!!

Such a poignant memory, and I can understand why you can't hear it without crying.

Once again I'm in agreement with you about choices, I'm still not over Season's 9 finale.
