Things can never be simple, can they?

Our heating is powered by a boiler which is now about 15 years old and undeniably past its best, so back in the Autumn, Mr D and I decided to take the plunge and replace it ready for the winter.

So, late October, we contacted British Gas who sent a representative over, complete with Boiler catalogue - that was a scintillating evening, I can tell you!

Our current boiler is in an outside meter cupboard on the side of our porch, but our friendly boiler expert told us that the new boiler couldn't be put there because of new legislation, not enough space for air to circulate, yada yada yada ...

So, the new boiler would have to be moved to the other side of the wall, in the downstairs toilet, which now means that structural work to the house is now part of our new boiler installation. :(

It gets better.  When the workmen came in early November to check the job out, they found asbestos in the work area.  So all plans were immediately halted until asbestos removal could take place.  *sigh*

So today, I've been working from home while a team of asbestos experts do what they need to do to remove all the asbestos.  I've had a big orange truck, complete with decontamination unit trailer and a mile long list of hazard warning signs parked outside my house all day, together with two guys in hazchem suits wandering around, cordoning off the front of the house with a big perspex work tunnel.

On the plus side, I think the people of Lightwater think there's been a rabies outbreak at my house - there's been some very alarmed looks from passers by all day! :D

Holy shit! What the hell was asbestos doing in your house! That's scary. I hope they get rid of every last lethal bit of it without incident.

The house was built in 1976, and - although I'm not particularly knowledgeable about this - I guess asbestos was still in general use then.

The workmen haae got rid of all the asbestos in the area where the work to install the boiler will take place. There is still some in the structure of the front porch pparently, but it's encapsulated in the brickwork so perfectly safe. It's only if we ever decided to have more work done and expoosed it that it would become dangerous!

That's good to know - no disturbing things for you then!

At least they're doing it right.

Two years ago, they fixed up a house (three storeys and a top floor) on the other side of the street. My husband was very concerned about asbestos in there, though the project manager said he could SEE there wasn't any in the construction. He was very mad when my hubby called the building department, that made the manager analyze some of the construction waste.

Of course there was no asbestos.

The thing is, asbestos is such a nasty thing, you can't be too cautious!

Oh dear. That's enough to make Sam and Dean veer
off to the other side of the street when passing. :P

Asbestos, never fun. Glad they are getting rid of it.

To explain it all away to your neighbors you could come up with some fun excuse about putting plastic up around the inside of the house to secure a line of salt to capture a ghost that has been haunting your house, or something fun like that. So many many possibilities.

Oh, I will find some fun way to torment the neighbours, I'm sure :D

Eek!

Asbestos is definitely no fun. :( But I'm glad things got taken care of properly. *needs Dizzo and Mr. D to be safe*

Of course the first thing that came to mind when I read your entry was the scene from E.T. where they wrap up Elliot's house and have the work tunnel leading up to the front porch and run around in hazmat suits and everything. So mebbeh it wasn't asbestos but actually an alien hiding in there...??? *narrows eyes suspiciously*

Awww, thank you :)

It did look like that scene from ET ... no aliens in my house I'm afraid, even Mr Dizzo is only human; only just, but ...

The asbestos is all out and the boiler is all in and sanity (such as it is) has been restored in my home!

We're surrounded in asbestos in this place, it's a post war building and all they did was use it. It's not what you'd call the 'bad' kind, LOL, like there's a good kind, but it's not gonna give us lung disease.

It looks like they finally quarantined Barry or something ;)

I hope it's all fixed and whatnot now!

Yes, they finally realised that Barry is an alien from the Planet Zog :)
