A few weeks ago, I posted a picture that I drew of Tony Dinozzo, Michael Weatherley's character in NCIS, which I drew as a Christmas surprise for my Mum.

However, over the last few weeks, I've kept looking at it on and off, and I've become more and more aware that I'm not really happy with it.

I can't quite put my finger on what I don't like about it, except that I think it looks 'shallow'; there just doesn't appear to be any depth or solidity to it.

I also deviated from my norm and drew it on a pale background.  I did this, firstly because I didn't actually have any black paper at the time, and secondly, I know my Mum likes lighter colours but, again, I don't think it did anything for the picture.

So, I decided to do it again, this time on my favourite black background, and, I think I'm much happier with the second version ...

What do you reckon?

I like them both. I like the bluer eyes in the first one, but I like the complexion in the second one. Also think the darker background makes the over all picture pop just a bit more.

That's exactly what I think. I think the first one looks 'flat', somehow kind of shallow.

Strangely enough, i think the first one looks a bit more like him - it has more of a DeNozzo expression than the second one. But the shading one the cheeks is more natural-looking on the second. Can you work a little bit more on the first one without the paper collapsing on you? Because i think if you could smooth out the strong lines going down from his nostrils (outlining his cheeks) and maybe refine his nose a tad (it looks a little wide down the length), I think that one is the much better of the two.

Edited to say - OR maybe work on his mouth in the second one, because I think that is what is making him look more like Tony in the first one. It's in the line of the mouth, and the way you have it quirking in the first one.

I'm very limited in what I can do to either of them because they're both fixed, but as you say, I may have little fiddle with the mouth on the second one if I get a moment over the weekend, to get it quirking upwards a bit more!

I reckon that would work - even over the fixing.

I don't know the character well enough to say, but the second one looks "harder" to me.   m.   :/

I think it looks more solid too.

I'm torn, it's an expression very much like the one's he pulls in the second but the first seems to look a little more like him, however it's what you're happy with and what your Mama thinks that counts :) Great work.

Thank you. It's fascinating how different the two look when they're compared, but of the two, I definitely like the second one best. To me the first one just looks kind of flat and lifeless.
I don't know if it was something as simple as working on the pale paper instead of the dark paper, but I'm just not comfortable with that one!

Honestly? I like the first one better bc it just, well, fits. And I like the other one the best bc of the expression.

It's amazing how different two pictures of the same person by the same person can look. Therein lies the joy of art!

exactly! when i did art all the time (in advanced costume design), i had pretty much the same style, but i'd use different backgrounds, different mediums, etc.

I adore how you've captured his gorgeous eyes, reminds me of his 'Eyes Only' scenes in Dark Angel. I love both of them, but I do like his bottom lip better in the first one!

Bren is a huge Tony fan and loves what you've done.
