In the recent Fill the blanks meme, [livejournal.com profile] wings128 rightly suggested that dapplegrey horses were something that I like.  She's spot on, although I would also add horses in general.

I've loved horses forever.  I'm the little pony-mad girl who never grew out of her love of our four-legged friends, and never intends to either!

This post is dedicated to Paddingtion, Pandora, Richmond, Becket, Charlie, Galway, Galaxy, Penmarrick, Rio, Cobbles, Amigo, Shem, Red, Millie, Lad, Jaffa, Colonel, Solo and any other of the many wonderful horses and ponies who I've had the privilege of knowing throughout my life!

Aw, the last two in particular are gorgeous! I love horses too. I started riding at 4 and owned my own from 11. She lived until she was 36. I had another too, a big gorgeous bay thoroughbred mare who unfortunately was quite damaged by her previous owners and I bought out of pity. I ended up giving her away to someone who had a single stable and some land, which is what she needed. I just wanted to make sure she went to a good home. I don't think I'd ever own my own horse again - the expense and the commitment is too much with children now, but I'll never give up riding.

That's a wonderful thing that you did for your bay mare, such a shame she had to suffer at the hands of the morons who owned her first.

I've never owned my own horse, and I must admit, I rarely ride now, I just seem to have fallen out of the habit, but I get a lot of my satisfaction from drawing horses now rather than riding them.

You rode a horse called "Colonel"? *GRIIINS*
That's what I'd call mine if and when I ever get to have one.
And two border collies called "Shep" and "Dex" ;)

Colonel was a lovely big liver chestnut cob. It was like riding an armchair :D
I hope you get the opportunity to get your menagerie one day!

What wonderful pictures. There's something so freeing about riding a horse; the breeze in your facem the relaxation of being with yourself and the animal who's trusting you to treat it well. I loved riding, just haven't done it in so long now.

Same here, I got out of the habit of riding when I abstained for 18 months while my arm was healing after my accident. Now I occasionally ride when I'm on the Isle of Wight and haven't got a show going on, but very rarely otherwise.

So what's your involvement with horses now? Do you still ride?

Very rarely now, and mainly on the Isle of Wight when I do - it's so much cheaper, and there's far less road riding necessary. I got out of the habit of riding when I abstained from it while I was reccovering from my accident back in 2006 (the consultant told me my arm would take up to 18 months to heal properly and I didn't want to put myself in a position where I was risking another damaging fall. During that time, I started doing more and more drawing, andd then dapplegrey art sprung up, and then I discovered Supernatural and fandom, and suddenly there aren't enough hours in the day to ride regularly as well. I get my satisfaction from drawing horses now!
