[livejournal.com profile] sinfulslasher asked 'What's your guilty pleasure?'

Okay, so I admit, I am a complete TV snob.

I love my fantasy, sci-fi, history and documentaries, and I enjoy most things that are considered fairly high-brow and thought provoking.  In the same way, I loathe anything that appeals to the lowest common denominator, and in particular, I detest reality TV and the knuckle-scraping morons it produces.  But ...

There's a a TV programme on here in the UK, I don't know if there is a comparable show on anywhere else in the world, but I just happened to catch an episode of it one quiet Sunday while I was home alone drawing.  When I'm drawing, I often like to put the TV on for a bit of background noise. I wasn't planning to watch it; of course I wasn't - I was concentrating on my drawing.  This TV show came on, and got distracted by it, then I got hooked ...

It's called 'Don't Tell the Bride', and the whole premise is that a couple get a £12,000 wedding all paid for by the TV company.  The only catch is that the bridegroom arranges it all; the bride doesn't get a say at all ... not even in choosing her dress.  She doesn't see a thing until she turns up on the wedding day.

It's train-crash TV. know it's all staged, and false, and edited, and basically, complete shite, but you know what?  I love it!

I don't dare watch it while Mr D's around - I'd never hear the last of it!

And that is my complete guilty pleasure!

My husband and I first bonded over Star Trek, so I could just see him now: all the bridegrooms would be dressed as Enterprise officers, the man marrying us would either be a Kirk or Picard impersonator, the ring bearer would be dressed like Wesley Crusher, he would arrange for the well-wishers to throw up the Spock sign and yell "Live long and prosper!" when we're pronounced man and wife, and I would be cool with all of that.

But then would come the wedding dress, and I know, I just KNOW, he would have me dressed up as Uhura: beehive wig, old school Bluetooth hanging on my ear, tricorder strapped across my torso like a purse, and that damned minidress with the pantyhose and boots! I love that he thinks I have the thighs for that, but I know I don't, and all the wedding attendees would see it!

Yes, there would be some drama. :)

Oh my god, I watched that show, I was addicted, lol! I even discovered an Australian version which I marathoned on ondemand. Was the British version just one season? On a deeper level it was nice to see that the men in their lives know what they really want, despite what the women say to their friends. I watched because I needed something utterly trivial for my brain to download after finishing the manuscript for Wolfhaven.

OMG I know that show! I've seen it a couple of times and was completely fascinated in a train-wreck-kinda-way. LOL! I can totally see why this would be a guilty pleasure. *g*

And who knows, maybe Mr. D will surprise you and end up a huge fan of the show. *g*

Thanks for answering. :)

"I loathe anything that appeals to the lowest common denominator, and in particular, I detest reality TV and the knuckle-scraping morons it produces." I so agree - I'm a Celebrity, Big Brother, Made In Chelsea, The Only Way is Essex - all of that dross just leaves me cold and despairing at the future of the human race!

I've only seen a bit of "Don't Tell The Bride" and I don't think it's quite as bad as some programmes! Brenda watches it and says it does get addictive!

Your secret is safe with us!
