fairyniamh asked about my favourite song.

My favourite song can change from week to week or month to month.  There are a few classics which will always be close to the top of my list, and of course Carry On My Wayward Son is always going to be among those, but my favourite song right now is 'The Sound of Silence' by the Disturbed.

It's that rarest of animals, a cover version which (to my ears) is better than the original.  And this haunting video ...

It's mesmerising!

I prefer Disturbed's Land of Confusion (though I also love Gensis' version) The Video, though animated, is powerful.

I love Kansas' Wayward Son, but I love the lullaby version too. For me, it depends on what kind of mood I am in.

I must admit, I hadn't heard anything of the Disturbed before this. Their usual music isn't really my 'thing'.
But I agree, the music I like depends so much on my mood at the time!

This is, as you say, a rare beast. Something that I was so in love with the original but the cover surpassed it!

I said to Barry, I's always liked this song, but I'd never really listened to the words before. I'd always listened to the melody in the original, but I think because in this version he throws so much emotion and anger into it, I really took the words in and I'd never realised what a dark song it is!

I think this is beautiful in a chilling kind of way!

I was guilty of the same thing, hearing the lyrics but humming the tune instead, now I HEAR the lyrics and it's a really hard hitting but beautiful song!

Well, as a huge Paul Simon fan I can't agree that this version is better than the original, but it is good and - unlike some covers - doesn't ruin it!

Yes, I heard Paul Simon on the radio saying he liked it and thought it was epic, and I agree with him - but for me nothing beats the original! I love Disturbed's version of Land of Confusion too.
