I've been a little bit out of circulation this weekend, as I've been over on the good old Isle of Wight (sans broadband) catching up with family; my Mum and Dad and my cousin Marie.

The plan was to go over with Barry too, but you know how it is;  the best laid plans of Dizzos and men go oft awry ...

On Friday afternoon, just  as I was leaving work, Barry texted me this picture with the cryptic caption 'the view outside Mum's house'.  That was all it said.

Yeah, thanks Bazza, so now I'm driving home from work practically hysterical, thinking my Mother-in-Law's been murdered or dropped down a sinkhole or something.

It turned out that MiL was fine - physically anyway, but that about an hour previously, some old dear had been driving past, lost control of her car, somehow managed to do a high-speed ninety-degree right turn off the road, through the hedge that you can just see above the policeman's head, and smash right into her house.

The scene wasn't very pretty ...

That wall is Eileen's bedroom - I'm just so glad it was the middle of the day and she wasn't even in the house, never mind in the bedroom.

This is what the wall looked like after the fire service had removed the car:

The whole front and side of the house is smashed and undermined, so it's completely uninhabitable.  Gas, electric and water has all had to be disconnected.  The front and side and a good part of the roof will practically need to be rebuilt

Engineers have shored up her bedroom to stop the ceiling caving in, and as the radiator was flung off the wall, the whole room is waterlogged.  Her bed is ruined!  So needless to say, Barry has been staying here on this side of the Solent, while I went to see my parents as arranged, to help his Mum deal with this mess.

He went over to the house with her yesterday under the supervision of a council builder to pick up some of her clothes and personal effects.

This is what her bedroom looks like from the inside!

Miraculously, it seems like the old lady driver is ok, She was taken to hospital as a precaution, but apart from being shaken up and very shocked, she is relatively unharmed, which is more than I can say for her insurance policy over the next few weeks!!!

The house is a council property, and at the moment the council are putting Eileen up in a local hotel because she's effectively homeless.  She has a meeting with them tomorrow to decide the long term solution because it's going to be weeks, maybe months, before the house is rebuilt/repaired to the point that it's fit to live in again.

When I first heard about this, my first thought was 'Oh hell, I hope she's alright'.  My second thought was, 'Oh hell, I hope she doesn't need to come and live with us for weeks on end!'

Does that make me a very bad person??  :D

Thank God she wasn't in the house! And that there were no lasting injuries. Live is never boring in Dizzoland!! Glad to have you back.

Hopefully your MiL will be back in her home again safely soon, and not in yours!! ;)

This happened to my neighbour, she was in the bath at the time!
The car crashed in to her kitchen and she was trapped in the house till the car was removed. She was freaked out. Cameron watched the accident from his bedroom, i only heard it.
Cam thought it was awesome, but he was 9 at the time!

Yes, it was all a bit of a shock, but it's easy to forget how lucky we are that no-one was hurt.

Poor Cameron - that's the sort of experience that could leave someone traumatised!

Very lucky indeed

Not Cameron, it was the right side of nutty for him, but then he was safely looking out of his window!!

HOLY SHIT!!
At first glance you think it's just a ding, but the impact damage goes all the way back! O.O
This reminds me of an incident when I was a kid, and how a girl at our school barely managed to survive a truck ploughing down off the road and through her bedroom wall. It was at night, so she was in her bed, and ended up pressed up against her wall with the mattress being all that kept her from the grill of the truck.

I'm relieved to learn your MiL is well and safe, and no, it doesn't make you a bad person, hun. Truly, I though you were going to say that she was living with you. We all need our space. *HUGS*

That's horrific - that poor girl must have been terrified.
MiL isstill in hotels at the moment, but it looks like the Council have found her some accommodation now, so it looks like sshe's sorted, thankfully.
Work will start on her house after Easter apparently.

I would say so, not to mention years of therapy in order to get to sleep at night once more.
I'm relieved that she will have her own place soon, though it will take a bit to get settled.
I hope apparently is of short duration.

OMG! Wow, unreal! I am so glad everyone is alright and that she wasn't home when it happened! That is a frightening sight to behold. I feel bad for the elderly lady who caused the accident but you're right, the insurance policy will freak out her and them! Oh my. No! You aren't a bad person. I was thinking of my family when reading this and that would have been my thought as well, lol. Hang in there hon!

Yes, when something like this happens, you're so shocked that it actually happened, it's easy to overlook the fact that no-one was hurt.

Good grief that's big hole and a lot of damage! I would think the council will rehouse her as that's all going to take some time to rectify. Thank goodness she wasn't at home, but what a shame her bedroom's been ruined. You're not a bad person for thinking that at all, a week or two might be fine but if it's for an indefinite period, it would be a strain!

It is a lot of damage! She's still in hotels at the moment, but it looks like the Council have finally sorted out some accommodation for her!

Ye gods. So much worse than it looks from the outside. Thank goodness she wasn't in bed when it happened.
And no...as others have said, you need your space and the repairs sound like they could take a very long time!

It looks like the Council have sorted out her accommodation, so I think we're off the hook!
They reckon two to three months for the repairs starting after Easter.

It's looking like about two to three months for repairs. But the council have sorted her out some accommodation, and as you rightly say, she's safe. That's what's important!

Bloody HELL! Thank heavens she wasn't home!!

At least it *is* a council property and they have to do the work, because that would cost a fortune!

And no honey,t hat doesn't make you a bad person, I'd have thought exactly the same!

*hugs* bloody hell that was a close call!

It's looking like the Council are gradually getting things sorted, at a typical 'local government' pace!
But she's OK, the old lady's OK - that's the important thing :)

lol, the old lady? Lovely ;)
How's it all going, have they put her in the new build yet?

Holy hell!

At least nobody got hurt, and the council is taking care of your MiL, but damn. Poor driver, she might have had the shock of a lifetime.

I'd personally kill my mum with my bare hands if she demanded to live at my place for twelve minutes, so no, it doesn't make you a bad person. If she had nowhere to stay, then yeah, it wouldn't make you exactly nice.

Here's to your MiL, being rehomed and her house being rebuild in no time.

I know what you mean. Thankfully, it looks like the Council are getting things sorted for her, so she's going to be okay. Repairs to her house will take two to three months so it seems.

It's strange how you can care about someone but be driven bonkers by them isn't it? Whereas I generally tend to be a 'glass half full' person, my MiL is very much a 'glass half empty' person, and I find that sort of constant negativity so wearing, I just can't really deal with it!

First - if it's a council house they should re-house her so hopefully your last comment won't be necessary!!
Secondly - bloody hell!! On that initial photo from the outside it didn't look as though the damage was that bad but blimey! That old girl really did a number on that house, didn't she. How on earth did she manage it?

Date: 2016-03-22 09:35 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dizzojay.livejournal.com
barry and I have been theorising on how she must have managed it ever since Friday, and we've had to conclude - with great difficulty!!!

I'm so glad everyone was ok and at least your Mother in Law was out at the time. The old lady really made a mess of her house didn't she? At least with it being a Council property they will have to sort out the building work and re-homing her. And no your not a bad person for thinking that, trust me as one who knows all about this, your life is not your own.

Lastly I did wonder why they were filming Fast and Furious 8 in your Mother in Law's front garden.

Yes, the Council are gradually getting MiL sorted out, so any risk of us needing to take in a lodger is unlikely, thankfully. Yes, everyone is okay, and that's what is important - it's amazing how easy it is to forget that!

So glad to hear no one was hurt. I agree with the others, it doesn't look like too much when you glance at the outside, but go inside and holy heck, that little car really did a number on the house. It was fortunate no one was home. Even if they wouldn't have been in the bedroom, the noise and surprise alone could have given someone a heart attack. It sounds like your MiL should be housed by the council property. They need to take care of that business and not put you out. And NO, that does not make you a bad person for not wanting to house her during that time.

Very true. Sometimes with things like this we get so caught up in the incident that we neglect to just be thankful that no one was harmed. Very easy to forget the little things.
