Nablopomo 2023 - Day 16
Nov. 21st, 2023 07:46 pmDay 17- What movie, book, or TV episode makes you cry without fail? (Or get wibbly, if you're not a crier.)
There are lots of films and stories that get me snivelling; anything involving animals normally does the trick, and in that vein, a sure fire guarantee to get my waterworks flowing is Watership Down.
I guess this book always affects me so much because I have a historical bond with rabbits, I've kept them as pets on and off since I was eight years old.
The book is so beautifully written, and well researched. A lot of people criticise Watership Down because parts of it are violent, they're distressing and sometimes full of despair. Well, that's life when you're a wild rabbit. Life's not a party when you're everyone's dinner, and I for one love that Richard Adams highlighted the challenges of bunny life and didn't fall into the cliche of turning Hazel, Fiver et al into fluffy bunny clones of Thumper.
The reader goes on such a breathless journey of danger and survival along with the rabbits, I think that's why I find the ending is so sad and so beautiful, and it affects me every single time!
