big_heart_june asked me what I love most about Sam and Dean.

tumblr_mkicyck44m1ritkxso1_1280

For starters, let me just say that although I am an out-and-out Dean girl, I love Sam dearly as well.   You can’t have one without the other; they are as much a part of each other as an arm or a leg.  As Dean so eloquently put it, ‘there ain’t no me if there ain’t no you.’

I’d be insulting your intelligence if I didn’t start off by saying it was their looks that initially drew me into the show.  However, early in season 1, I knew these characters  were so much more than just their pretty faces.

I love their rabid loyalty toward each other and toward those they love.  I love their bond, deeply loving without being mawkish and unrealistic – I love the way they banter and fight, just the way real brothers would.

I love Dean’s subtle intelligence.  Dean is often thought of as the ‘dumb’ one, but nothing could be further from the truth.  Dean may not be academic and full of book-learning like Sam is, but his street-smarts are formidable.  You’d have to get up very early to get one over on Dean.

I love that underneath their rough exteriors they have hearts of gold; I love their overwhelming desire to protect others, even those who don’t deserve protecting.

What I love most about them though is that they are both deeply flawed characters, and that makes them easier to relate to.  They have insecurities and faults the way we all do, but they also have a darkness and a recklessness that has been instilled by the life they have been forced to lead. Despite that, however, they still focus on doing the right thing for the right reasons, even if the means to that end isn't particularly pleasant; the road to hell ... and all that.

They are such well-conceived, well-written, well-acted, multi-faceted characters, I can honestly say that I have never been so emotionally invested in any other work of fiction, and I doubt whether I ever will again.

Love your comment and a lot of your thoughts mirror my own.

Ironically, it was their looks that put me off watching SPN way back when it started. I know, I'm horrified with myself now for even thinking that. But I did kind of skim through the Pilot and at the end thought they were just tweeny pretty boys and criminals to boot. You know the whole paying for gas with fraudulent credit cards and impersonating federal marshals.

Luckily I caught a few season 4 eps, almost couldn't recognise the boys, Sam especially, and become the obsessed Sam!Girl and SPN'er that I am today.

I think most of us fangirls are on the same page when it comes to our girls. I am a Dean!Girl, but I defend Sam vehemently if there is any hate directed at him by random nutjobs!

It wasn't their looks that grabbed me when I started watching, it was their vulnerability, especially Dean. Their prettiness actually grew on me! LOL Otherwise - I'd say ditto to everything here!

Not at all, being pretty certainly doesn't hurt and keeps my attention when scripts fail!

What you love about Sam and Dean . . . is exactly what I love about Sam and Dean.

Especially this:
I love their rabid loyalty toward each other and toward those they love. I love their bond, deeply loving without being mawkish and unrealistic – I love the way they banter and fight, just the way real brothers would.

This right here is why I watch. Why I'm still watching. Kripke and Co. truly captured lighting in a bottle when they cast Jared and Jensen as Sam and Dean. Most excellent post.

Excellent comment. It totally captures Sam and Dean's characters and the reasons why we all love them and the show.

Well I have to say, I do end up in some odd places, so I wouldn't be at all surprised.

I think most of us 'reasonable' fans (as opposed to the Tumblr-esque nutters) feel the same way about our boys!

Very, very well put. Your reasons are pretty much exactly my reasons. I have never been so deeply invested in a show or in fictional characters so much. And I probably never will be again.

As someone else said, it was lightning in a bottle. And we are much richer for it. We have been blessed.

I do love everything about your answer. YES YES and YES!!! These two characters really are some of the best characters I have ever seen in all my years. While I have enjoyed some other characters there have never been any characters where I have become as emotionally invested in as I am in Dean and Sam. A lot of that is credit to the writers, but I also think it is also credit to Jensen and Jared and how they have breathed life into these two characters. I also highly doubt I will ever see such characters again as this.

Yes, it is credit to the writers as they create the bare bones of the characters, but it's Jared and Jensen who have fleshed them out into the characters we all adore. :)
