The Days:
1. Something Old
2. Something new
3. Something you made for someone else
4. Something you made just for yourself
5. Something for a major fandom/pairing/character
6. Something for a minor fandom/pairing/character
7. Something you're just really proud of

Today's prompt calls for something for a major fandom/pairing/character.  As I only write/make art in the Supernatural fandom and I haven't ventured into writing slash yet, I'm going to go with a major character.

Which is, of course, Dean.  Duh!

Most of the things I write about Dean involve some degree of comedy, injury, humiliation and light-hearted fun-poking, but just occasionally, something will prod my muse and I find myself visiting Dean's past, and the journey that has brought him to who he is today, and sometimes, that's quite a sad exercise.

The following two drabbles are little slices of empathy for Dean's difficult life; exploring just two of the countless facets that make today's Dean the complicated and deeply flawed hero that we all know and love so much.

UGLY DUCKLING
Rating: K+
Genre: Angst/General
Character: Dean Winchester
Spoilers/Warnings: Very vague for 1.9, Home
Word Count: 100
Disclaimer: don't own them

Inspired by Missouri Moseley's throwaway comment in 'Home' (because, well, we all know how Dean really needs yet another dent to his self esteem)

The 'goofy-looking kid' reflects on his looks ... and his life.

Dean loved being an uncommonly handsome guy.

He wore the face that nature blessed him with comfortably and with an easy charm, never taking it for granted; loving the attention it attracted.

Because it wasn't always that way.

xxxxx

He remembered being 'the goofy-looking kid'.

He remembered everyone adoring little Sammy's dimples and big brown eyes whilst completely ignoring the mousy little squirt standing bow-legged in the corner.

He remembered the bullies in fourth grade.

xxxxx

The ugly duckling had resigned himself to growing into the kind of dork that girls crossed the street to avoid.

Instead he grew into an exquisite swan.

DARK
Rating: K+
Genre: Angst/General
Character: Inanimate Object with mentions of Dean Winchester
Spoilers/Warnings: 5.16, Dark Side of the Moon
Word Count: 100
Disclaimer: don't own them

Someone, or something, remembers better times ...

It's dark where I am now.

I don't know where that is; I remember a trashcan on a shabby motel floor, but nothing more.

Some say I came from heaven; maybe so, but I enjoyed another heaven for many years.

Ever since that little boy hung me around his neck, and I rested against his warm chest, listening to his softly beating heart; I knew it was a good heart.

Things changed over time; the voice grew deeper, the neck grew thicker, the chest grew broader, but that soothing heartbeat never changed.

Then someone broke that heart.

I think I heard something, but it might just have been my knees creaking.
Thank you :)

I always hated that comment from Missouri in 'Home' The little Dean we saw in the Pilot was not goofy looking to me. He was adorable, and from my first glance I fell in love with that kid. But, I loved this little drabble, and yes, that goofy looking kid did turn into a most beautiful swan.

As for the amulet - oh...my....gosh! That is a wonderful inanimate object POV story that just breaks my heart. I love the thought of it hearing the soothing heartbeat that never changed. Despite all the ever-changing circumstances going on around Dean all the time, his heart, his beautiful, genuine heart, never really did change. Such a shame that it broke.

Thank you - I'm glad you liked these. That comment of Missouri has never sat well with me either; as if Dean needs another dent to his fragile self-esteem?

I had a hard time with Missouri's other comment as well, the one where she said that Dean wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed. Boy was she ever wrong on that account. I think that one bothered me more than the goofy looking kid one. Dean's self-esteem is already battered enough, he doesn't need any other sarcastic comment from the peanut gallery.
