dizzojay I've been to a funeral today. Like any funeral, it was sad, but it was a lovely celebration of a lovely man.
There's a local older couple that Mr D and I know well. Their names are Dot and Dave, and I've known them for at least ten years. I first got to know them when Dot commissioned me to draw a beloved dog they'd just lost, Gunner (Dave was an Arsenal fan!)
Since then, I've done another two pictures for them, one of their current dog, Dylan, the biggest Golden Retriever you'll ever see, and we bump into them frequently when we go to our local coffee shop for Saturday morning breakfast.
Dave hasn't been well recently. He had a form of bowel cancer and was receiving treatment for it. I know he's been struggling with the chemo, and about two months ago Dot commissioned me to do a portrait of Dave together with Dylan. She thought it would be a nice surprise for him when he finished his chemo.
She emailed me about a month ago when I was halfway through the picture to tell me that Dave had passed away.
Dot was obviously devastated, but she still wanted me to continue with the picture, so I finished it last week, and framed it this weekend.
For that reason, this has been one of the most poignant and special pictures I've ever done. Dot loves it, and that's good enough for me. I hope it's a worthy tribute to a lovely man.
