This is not something new that I’m doing as a result of this prompt, but something I started about three weeks ago. It’s not strictly a fandom-related activity, but indirectly it is…

I’ve decided to learn (or at least brush up on) German!

I learned German for a year early in secondary school, that would have made me around thirteen or fourteen but then I dropped it as I felt I could only really focus on one language, so I stuck with French for the rest of my school time.

Unfortunately, having learned that one year of very basic German, it was then another 36 years before I actually went to Germany, by which time the German that I’d actually managed to retain amounted to little more than bitte, danke and auf wiedersehen.

The reason why this is indirectly related to fandom is that is year, I’m going to Dusseldorf for Purgatory con in May, and I thought it would be nice to try to expand my vocabulary. I don’t for one moment expect to be fluent, or even conversational, but if I can make myself understood even on a very basic level, it’ll be an improvement on anything I’ve managed before!
