I suspect he may have been fibbing ...

Yes, Dean does look very angst-ridden. It is wonderful to see Dean finally getting a big storyline that doesn't him watching out for Sam. I think by the time this is all said and done, it will be Sam's turn to try and save Dean, which is about time, if you ask me.
