December Meme - day 12
Dec. 12th, 2022 08:12 pmDecember 12 → talk about this year in medical news
This year has been a real mixed-bag medical-wise, and unfortunately not much of it has been good!
We started off the year preparing ourselves to lose my Dad who had taken a seriously bad turn just after Christmas 2021. When the paramedics finally exposed the grossly infected, festering lump of rotten meat on the end of his leg (which used to be a foot), which he had been hiding from my Mum and me for - probably years - we were spechless. I've never wanted to slap someone I love so much.
Cue a shit tonne of antibiotics and weeks of various tests and examinations during which my Dad seemed intent on being as obstructive as possible, but we eventually got to the root of the problem. Due to multiple blocked blood vessels he had no pulse in his left leg below the knee, so his foot had long since died off and gone gangrenous. The bad turn at Christmas was the onset of sepsis, and we all know that wouldn't have ended well.
Major surgery, including a partial foot amputation has resolved the problem, and he is still with us, and doing ok thankfully. The best thing is he's not smoking any longer, so that's a huge plus.
I had my own brush with mental health issues over the Summer with work-related anxiety. I'm working through the triggers for that and things have improved, although the main trigger - the payroll - is still a shitstorm; it's just slightly less of one as it was in June. I just hope it carries on moving in that direction!
Finally, this has been an autumn of colds. I'm now on my third cold in four months. My immune system is absolutely shot to hell, and I'm convinced this is a fall out from all the lockdowns during Covid. The last two colds have affected me one worse than the other, and a month ago, in addition to antibiotics, I ended up undergoing a chest x-ray and some blood tests to rule out pneumonia as the second cold had left me with a residual cough I just couldn't shake off. That had just started to ease nicely, and then BAM! Last week, third cold hit me. I'm trying very hard to rest and look after myself as I really don't want to be dealing with cold no. 4 over Christmas!!
Wish me luck :)
