December 04 → talk about television this year

There have been some very interesting TV experiences this year, not least of which was Squid Games.  My curiosity was piqued by the big doll figure in the trailer, so I gave it a try.  I've never watched a Korean series before but I really enjoyed it.  I'm not going to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it but it's a fascinating drama with a hint of comedy.  The main characters are interesting and personable in varying degrees, and it's very, very dark!!  It gets my recommendation, but I totally accept that it wouldn't be for everyone!

Then, on to our boys (in other words J2), and their projects:

The BOYS!!!  We finally got a glimpse of the Ackles ass and what a bloody fine ass it was.  Jensen absolutely knocked it out of the park as the likably unlikeable Soldier Boy.  To take someone so disagreeable and make people feel for him, whether it be pity or empathy, or even love, is no mean feat.  I see that Jensen has won an award for his performance, and it should be the first of many!  Season 3 was an absolute riot, and Soldier Boy was the rather scrumptious cherry on top of a very zany and obnoxiously brilliant cake.

I need to try to get back to Walker and persevere with it.  I watched the first seven episodes of season 1 and I just couldn't connect with it.  I'm not into cop shows or family dramas, but I really wanted to like it.  But I didn't.  There wasn't one single character in the whole show that I cared for, and I hate to say it, not even Walker.  After ten years of watching Supernatural where I would have given my first born (if, indeed, I had one) to protect Sam and Dean, this came as a bit of a shock.  I do want to revisit it and try again, now that it's more established.  I realy want to support Jared.

Big Sky.  Having said that I don't care for cop shows, I'm actually enjoying this.  I'm loving Beau Arlen, he's a classic Jensen creation; a potent combination of smartass wise guy with a hint of vulnerability and genius comic timing.  The other characters are fine, but I don't have an emotional connection with any of them yet.  I have to admit, I struggle with scenes involving the Sunny Barnes character.  Not that I have a problem with her acting, but seriously - how much work has that woman had done?  Her face looks llike it needs planning permission and it kind of takes me out of the story a bit!  In terms of the show as a whole, I'm not invested enough to go back and watch season 1 and 2 before Beau appeared, but I'm looking forward to each new episode every week and it's nice to have that feeling again.

I've started watching The Winchesters and I've got about five episodes in, and to be honest I'm struggling with it.  I can get past the fact that it's currently going against canon because I trust Jensen to respect that and I'm sure there's going to be some unforeseen twist/reveal which will tie up the loose ends.  I like the John character, he seems personable enough, but I can't stand Mary.  She's nothing like the young Mary in Supernatural and just comes off as a whiny and sullen dislikeable brat.  I've had a couple of weeks away from it, but I'd like to persevere with it as I really want to support Jensen.

And that's the highlights of my year in TV for 2022!

Agreed (with most of it, especially as I haven't been able to watch Squid Games or catch up on The Boys yet).

I stuck with Walker until I'm not sure what episode this season when I lost access to it. I can't say it got better, but it did eventually embrace that it's basically a soap opera and leaned in to it.

This season of Big Sky is apparently its own thing and has nothing to do plotwise from the first two seasons, so you are missing nothing by not watching them - that was what I was told when I asked if I needed to watch them.
