I totally understand that. The 'first' of everything is always the hardest; the first Christmas, the first fathers' day without him etc.
I remember after my Grandad passed away in August 2009, being out shopping on my 42nd birthday and just breaking down in the middle of a coffee shop because it just dawned on me that this was my first birthday without any Grandparents. It was an odd and very sad realisation that just hit me like a train. So everything you're going through is completely normal and understandable. As you say, loss is one of those things we have to live with, but that doesn't make it any easier.
