"Please, I'm fifty-three years old," he said, dismissive. "I've had every type of sex there is."

They were grabbing an early dinner before Jack went in for his shift, Robby on his day off. Robby telling tales on his day off, it seemed. Jack was practically required to scoff at him. "Like hell you have."

Robby leveled him with a look. "And how would you know?"

"Because I know you. And you have never once given up control."

Interdepartmental Relations (7604 words) by Alethia
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Pitt (TV)
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Jack Abbot/Michael "Robby" Robinavitch
Characters: Michael "Robby" Robinavitch, Jack Abbot (The Pitt), Emery Walsh, Dana Evans, Montgomery Adamson
Additional Tags: Pre-Season/Series 01, Jealousy, Pining, Idiots in Love, First Kiss, First Time, Porn, why do robby and walsh hate each other, let us explore
Summary:

When Robby ambled in a little early for his shift, central was a hive of activity, Walsh calling back to Jack as she accompanied a gurney out of Trauma 2: "Learn from the master, soldier boy."

"When you find one, be sure to let me know, princess," he shot right back, but the note of fondness in his tone made Robby freeze. That wasn't their usual back-and-forth. That held warmth to it. An undercurrent of knowing. A joke shared between two people who'd seen each other naked. More than once.

Robby clocked Jack watching Walsh go—what the fuck—and then he went back into Trauma 2, debriefing with the team. It was the tiniest moment, nothing—

And yet Robby's whole understanding had just realigned. Jack and Walsh. What the fuck.

Missing in action

Today I thought I should update DW as I've been MIA for a couple of months only to find my last entry was 2 February.

Apparently I have been reading but not really posting or commenting. Put it down to the fact that when things are pants I direct my rage via other more pulic platforms and have spent a lot of time over the last few months signing all the petitions, sending money when I can to places where I think it might have the most effect and writing increasingly pissed off letters to my MPs and councillors.

For my own sanity I think I need to have one online space which strives for a sense of normality and that's going to be DW. Everything else is over on my Twitter, Threads and Insta accounts.

In a brief catch up what I have I been doing since February? Working and possibly doing so excessively from March through to last week as (a) spring/summer are my busy seasons and (b) there's a lot of change going on. At one point I was about 100+ hours in-hand with flexi time (it's a lot less now). I've spent some time on the allotment, less time in the garden and the flat is still chaos.

On the plus side I am getting to grips with the flat after 5 months of ignoring or stepping over or around things, the allotment doesn't look too bad and I have a plan to whip the garden into shape this month.

I've got two weeks booked off (15 August to 1 September) and the plan is to sort out the allotment, garden and do some maintenance on the flat. I also plan to go to Wales the last week of the month.

I'm also looking negotiate working remotely for some chunks of time over the autumn/winter season - possibly the last two weeks in October, the last week in November and first week of December and a week to 10 days in January, February and March.

Fingers crossed it all happens!

Lazy Ass Sunday Blues

Well Walking is considered an exercise, can't imagine why it wouldn't be? (Physical therapists prefer it - running causes lots of injuries. I should know, I used to run.)

And I've been doing "Japanese Walking" my entire life. Three minutes fast-paced, then slower walking, then increasing intensity, then a slow down.

I slow down to take pictures, then speed up. I walk everywhere. My preferred mod of transportation is my feet on the ground.

Also finally started on the watercolor of a woman I saw on the train, that was plaguing me. It's turning out better than expected. Now lets hope I don't destroy it - which I often do - by not adding to much to it.

***

Television Shows

1. Paradise - I don't know about this one. The mystery is okay. The science fiction trope - annoys me. I don't like the trope. I'm not a fan of spoiler for the reveal in the first episode )

Also, there's something about the lead actor, that always has grated on my nerves? A kind of smug self-righteousness or superiority? It comes across in every role he plays? I do however like Julianne Nicholson and Cassidy Freeman, so I may stick with it, not certain?

2. Andor S2 - Episode 7 was good. I kind of split it in half though. I do like the sense that each episode is its own separate movie?
It's getting better as it goes. And I've fallen for Cassian.

3. And So it Goes - Billy Joel documentary on HBO Max - is about five hours long, and I'm three quarters of the way through. It encompasses Billy Joel's life from a child to roughly 76 years of age now, where he is now. Joel as previously stated is an American Pop Singer, Song-Writer and Composer who rose to fame in the later half of the 20th Century. He was/is classically trained, and his musical underpinnings are classical - not blues or rhythm or blues like most rock and roll music. His musical structure tended to be closer to the 1950s and early 60s rock and the songs of Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Frankie Valley, the Sherrels. Which you either appreciate and like or you don't. Many rock critics have a fondness for the Blues, and don't like anything that veers away from it. The other problem was well - a prejudice against Long Island. There's a kind of Manhattan/NY snobbery about those who live out on Long Island or Jersey (it's silly of course, but people are well silly.)

The documentary much like the Beatles docs - focuses on the music, and the personal hand in hand. It's well edited, and well put together. But it does...how to put this exactly? Goes a bit overboard in promoting the product of Billy Joel, and how great Billy Joel is. And it's a difficulty I have with musician documentaries. At times they feel a bit like fan service? I find them slightly more interesting when they back down from the fan service and let the person and their life stand for who and what they are. Instead of asking - why do we like him, what appeals to us, and trying to answer that? Just let those questions and answers go unsaid? It's not a critical documentary at all - however, there are critical things under the surface? Joel married much younger and very beautiful women, post-Elizabeth Webber. The latest 33 years younger. Those were the women he has had children with. He also is a heavy drinker, and at least two of his marriages broke up because of heavy drinking, partying and not being around. And he was never satisfied - always hunting for something else, out there.

I think it goes back to my painting - adding too much on top, which causes problems. Sometimes stepping back and letting it stand is best.

I don't need to hear that music saved his life, or he doesn't know what else he could have done, or you do what you love...just let the music stand with the story, and let it just be that.

At any rate, others loved it, I have mixed feelings about it? But I've always had mixed feelings about Billy Joel and his music. And I can see why people don't like him.

***

Today's and yesterday's questions:

2. Do you like milkshakes? What’s your favourite flavour?

Yes. At the moment? Coffee. When I was a teen - Strawberry - I loved McDonalds'Strawberry milkshakes - I can't drink them now of course. But when I was in Junior High aka Middle School - I'd get one on my walk home from school at McDonald's which I passed in the mini-shopping center one block down from the school. (The Middle School is long gone - it's now an independent retirement center, and so too, is the McDonald's. I haven't seen them - was told this by a friend of my brother's - I've not been back to that area of the world in more than 20 years.)

3. Have you ever played hopscotch?

Yes, as a child, and as an adult.

It's a popular pavement or sidewalk game.

This is the last set of designs I completed. finished a week or so ago. They're smaller than the seashells, only about 11 by 8cm, and again stitched on 18 count with one strand of thread. this time I used rustico aida, which I love stitching on.

Again, putting the pics behind a cut because of size.

Sherlock Sunday: The Hound of the Baskervilles, Chapters 8-10

So here we have the First Report and Second of Doctor Waston (Chapters 8 & 9)

This brings in an item well known to fanficcers, the infamous missing page. Watson writes he is transcribing his own letters which are before him but one page is missing.

What did it contain?? Why is it missing??

They get a tour of the Baserville estate, the places relevant to the death of Sir Charles. And we get more on the mysterious behavior of the Barrymores. And the Stapletons. Sir Henry develops romantic feelings for Beryl Stapleton.

In Chapter 9, there is this line:

And now I pass on to another thread which I have extricated out of the tangled skein..."

And the Annotated Sherlock Holmes tells me this phrase was the original tile of A Study in Scarlet.

Another note from the Annotated Sherlock Holmes points out a bit of dialogue in Chapter 10 (where we switch from letters to Watson's diary) and makes a point I thought was interesting. The words are spoken by Sir Henry after learning that the Barrymores have been signaling and helping their brother/brother in law Selden the escaped convict.

I guess we are aiding and abetting a felon, Watson? But afte what we've heard, I don't feel as if I could give the man up so there is an end of it."

We have no evidence that Selden (the Notting Hill Murderer) is not guilty of the atrocious, fierce, brutal crime he committed.

So I wrote a ficlet about the ghost of his victim. This is skipping ahead to Chapter 12 when Selden is killed.

Title: The end of Selden
Fandom: Sherlock Holmes (ACD)
Rating: Gen
Length: 200
Prompt: assignment
Notes: Takes place during The Hound of the Baskervilles. Mention of murder, violence, vengance. Ghost.
Summary: The ghost of Selden's victim looks down upon his dead body.

Edited to add: The Annotated also makes the unnecessary comment that It has delighted (DELIGHTED! REALLY!?) a generation of Sherlockians that Laura Lyons was the Playmate of the Month in the February 1976 issue of Playboy. Hugh Hefner apparently told the editor the Annotated that that was her real name, ending years (YEARS! ALSO, REALLY?!) of speculation. YOUR DIRTY OLD MAN IS SHOWING, MR. EDITOR!. But this along with the 'and Watson!' about The Sexual Adventures of Sherlock Holmes tells you everything you need to know (and how far mainstream is from transformative works world).

And even though it is only tangentially related, I did write a poem for my 52 poem challenge. Prompt 29 is use a proverb or adage or idiom. So I used the phrase (from the Southern US) 'that dog won't hunt' which means an idea isn't going to work or isn't right for some reason. This is a kyrielle.

that dog won't hunt by okapi

behold many a braying beast!
among this pack, even the least
will track, dawn to dusk, west to east
and yet I say: that dog won’t hunt

all stalwart trackers to a cur
all clever brutes in mottled fur
ready to stalk, ready to stir
and yet I say: that dog won’t hunt

the wits, the ways, the courage, too,
so many things these pups could do,
could follow, find, unearth for you
And yet I say: that dog won’t hunt

appearances can oft deceive
prove what hearts already believe
a caution to upset, aggrieve
And yet I say: that dog won’t hunt

Check-In Post - Aug 3rd 2025

Hello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

This Week's Question: What do you like to listen to / watch while crafting?

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.

I now declare this Check-In OPEN!

Bookbinding: Head In The Lion's Mouth by renwhit

Cover of book showing wine red damask, a title plate with gold outline, and gold splatter.
Finally done with my biggest bookbinding project yet! One of my all-time favorite fics, Head In The Lion's Mouth by renwhit

I'm really happy with how this came out. I knew I wanted wine and gold as the color scheme. The wine colored damask was a placemat that I harvested and scraped away a lot of deteriorated batting/filling from the inside. The gold is metallic ink that I mixed 1:1 Brass and Bronze, which ended up with a very nice antique gold look. The Brass on its own looks too yellow, especially on page edges.

The typesetting. I tried out being more creative this time 'round. I put in fancy first letters of each chapter, and effect I like a lot. There are sections of the fic that switch to being right-aligned, so I had to add all of that by hand.

The binding! Despite the thickness of the book, I went with my normal method (Sea Lemon's stitch) rather than attempting a curved spine. Unfortunately, somehow when I set the glue on the spine to dry, the text block was weirdly angled and dried uneven. Which meant I spent twice as long (more actually, but I'll get to that) sanding down the edges to be even.

For doing the edges, I tried out applying the metallic ink with a brush (bad idea #1) and sealing it in with beeswax (bad idea #2). It looked good in the press, but when I cracked the pages, it became an uneven ugly mess. That meant...more sanding! Another half hour of sanding later, I did my normal technique of applying the ink with a piece of cloth (so it's drier than with a brush) and leaving it at that.

The title plate. Originally, I wanted to try using an iron-on sheet, but I couldn't get it to peel. Instead, I used normal paper with a single layer of varnish to give it a hint of water resistance and glued it on.

The splatter really added the verve and spunk the book needed. While Danny has wine red blood that splatters on a gold-toed shoe, this book cover inverts it! The wine red is a little more purple than the photos capture.

Lonely Prompts Sunday, Week 31 [DW Edition]

[ If you're interested in being a Tuesday-Thursday guest host, you can sign up here. Thanks! ❤ ]
↑↑↑ Available dates:
August 12 & 14
August 19 & 21
August 26 & 28

Hello there. ^.^ Let's give some Lonely Prompts the care and attention they deserve today. If this is your first time at [community profile] comment_fic on a Sunday, you can either request previous prompts to be filled or share your recent fills for prompts. (Or do both, of course!) ✎

How to look for prompts:
We have plenty of prompts that might just nibble away at your brain today. You can browse through the comm's calendar archive (here on LJ or here on DW) for themed and Free For All posts, or perhaps check out Sunday posts for Lonely Prompt requests. (Or, you can be like me, and try to save interesting prompts as you see 'em... and then end up with multiple text doc files full of [themes + links + prompts] that you can easily look through and search for keywords.) Multiple fills for one prompt are welcome, by the way! Oh, and you are very likely to find some awesome fills to read as well, and wouldn't it be nice to leave a comment on those lovely little writing distractions? ~_^

Whichever you decide to do, prompt or fill (or both), please remember:
1. You can only request five prompts to be filled.
2. You can request no more than three prompts from a particular fandom.
3. You can, however, fill as many prompts in as many fandoms as you'd like!
4. In the subject line, be sure to say whether it is a request or a fill!
5. You must link back to wherever the prompt is in the community archive (whether filling or requesting), and, if you're filling the prompt, please post the fill as a reply to the original prompt.
6. If you are filling an "any/any" prompt, please let us know what fandom you've written it for (or if it's original!).
8. If there are possible triggers in your story, please warn for them in the subject line!
7. If you've filled any lonely prompts in the past week, this is the place to share them!
9. Finally, please remember to add your prompt fills to our AO3 collection: Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2025 collection. See further notes on this option here.

If you are viewing this post on our Dreamwidth site: please know that fills posted here will not show up as comments on our LiveJournal site, but you are still more than welcome to participate. =)

If you have a Dreamwidth account and would feel more comfortable participating there, please feel free to do so… and spread the word! [community profile] comment_fic

A friendly reminder about our posting schedule: Themed posts for new prompts go up on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Saturdays are a Free for All day for new prompts of any flavor. August Theme - Rest & Relaxation

This month's theme is Rest & Relaxation and while unfortunately that doesn't mean we get to do no cleaning and sorting, it means that we are considering our own wellbeing. The idea of this month is to make a few chosen spaces in our homes more relaxing.

Starting this week with decluttering your bathroom - make your bathroom a pleasant place to relax and pamper yourself - remove unwanted/unneeded/out of date products, tidy and organise what's left.

Upcoming themes for the rest of the month
* Declutter your sleeping space - clearing the bedside cabinets, floor, organising your sleep area to make it more relaxing when you go to bed
* 'sightlines'. The idea for this week is to clear clutter from your chosen place to chill.

Fancake Theme for August: Marriage of Convenience

Photograph of a young Vietnamese couple in a sunny urban environment, with added text: Marriage of Convenience, at Fancake. A bride in a white dress and sunglasses leaves her groom behind at a bus stop. The bride is smiling and carrying a bouquet of lilies as she hikes up the long skirt of her dress and walks away. The groom is in the background, wearing a dark grey suit and sitting on a bench. He's blurry, but it looks like he might be smiling at her.

Weeks #505-509: "wait" and/or "survive" is open!

First off, sorry for the day delay in announcing new prompts, but that wine wasn't gonna taste itself!

Now that we're all back to our regularly scheduled programs, it's time to prompt once again. Thanks to a friend, I have a new favorite song blaring in my head, and that's how we got "survive" as a prompt. And whoa, but that one's a doozy. You could create a lot of angst with this one! From the sad suicide-mission that John Sheppard is apt to take, to surviving yet another Wraith attack on the city, to being chased on an alien planet by dinosaurs. Aah, survival.

And then we have "wait" - which, oh, can bring a whole ball of angst itself. Like Rodney trying to busy himself during Sheppard's suicide mission. But it can also be Carson waiting at the alter, losing his breath when he sees Laura appear in a wedding dress. Or it can be Atlantis, under siege, waiting to hear if their last message got through back to Earth.

There's lots you can do with "wait" and/or "survive" - and you've got the next few weeks to make the most of it. Go!

Smallville: Omiai by toomuchplor

Fandom: Smallville
Pairings/Characters: Clark/Lex
Rating: E
Length: 103,242
Creator Links: [archiveofourown.org profile] toomuchplor
Theme: Marriage of convenience
Content notes: The author has a note for this, but there are two attacks on women, one of which is a sexual assault. These are not graphic, nor do they involve main characters. There is mention of (poorly managed) mental health care facilities and life in them.

Summary: A long story about Froot Loops, celery salt, dorkdom, and -- oh yeah -- marriage.

Reccer's Notes: I first read this fic twenty years ago (!!) on LJ, and loved it. I was skeptical about whether I'd still like it since I'm not into Smallville anymore, and, you know, twenty years. Reader, it is still good. I stayed up late reading. I was nearly late to appointments because I was reading. It's that kind of story. Surprisingly few things seem dated. The phones are not smart, of course, and there's maybe more attention paid to Clark's bisexuality than would occur now. But, other than that, it has held up remarkably well, and only has about five typos. 🥰

Essentially, Lex's father, Lionel, has disowned him, and Lex needs to be married for a year in order to get an inheritance set aside by his mother. Clark needs money for college. They sign an agreement to be married for a year.

The trajectory of the story is absolutely what one would expect from this trope, but what sets the story apart is the quality of the writing. The plot is well thought out and the pacing and character development are excellent. I also appreciate that the supporting cast get their screen time: Pete, Chloe, Lois, Lionel, Mr. and Mrs. Kent. (Lana makes an appearance, but her screen time is blessedly minimal.) The story also takes on issues like Clark's abilities--and the ethics of using them--and his development as a reporter.

There's a good amount of humor in this story, too, which is a bonus. I mean, Clark is such a dork, and it's great. The requisite Smallville farm jokes are here for you.
